Anyone have pics of 70 Mustang Starter Relay?

ok, been working on the goofed up wiring on a 70 mach 1 for a guy that had a performance engine/etc installed in it.

They had the msd ignition and cooling fan wired together and to a relay. I found out later why this is so. Somehow, the starter will turn on in the "ON" position so they wired the ignition and cooling fans together so you could flip them on, crank the car with the key and turn the key back off to still have the engine running...this is bad.

once I got the cooling fan and ignition rewired properly I discovered this problem. The starter will crank over in either the "ON" position or the "START" position. Once cranked and back in the "ON" position the starter will continue to run along with the engine which is bad. Something got goofed somewhere when these people went through the harness.

I thought it might have been the ignition switch itself so I replaced that, no dice.

I've been looking through the wiring diagrams that WORTH sent me and it looks like there should be a RED wire, RED/BLUE STRIPE wire, and BROWN wire going to the starter relay by the battery. I only have the brown wire and red/blue wires at this guy's relay. I'm about ready to just rip all the wiring out of the car and go over it...

anyone had any demons like this? also, if anyone has a decent camera and a 70 model...if they could snap some pics of the starter relay and surrounding area showing how it's all wired up that would be great too.

I'll snap a couple pics when I get home. It sounds like the wire to the I post is on the starter post.

thats what I thought too but when I swapped it over I got nothing, when I reversed them the problem didn't change at all lol....something is goofy down there.

Here's a couple. Not sure what else you might need. Ignore the red wire. It's for my Duraspark set up. Does the car still have a neutral safety switch?

hey thanks for those pics, well that's the same way it's wired to the solenoid on this one...I wonder where that red wires comes into play??? hmmm

no actually it doesn't which has had me wondering...

the car has a built c4 behind it. think I should look into that?? All I remember that doing was preventing the starting circuit from completing when cranking in a ge....wait a minute...I think you're on to something...

There are two plugs at the firewall that look similar. One is for the neutral safety switch, the other is for the windshield wipers. I know this because I bypassed the switch and the first time I tried to turn on my wipers the starter engaged. So you might want to check some things out by the firewall.

sounds good to me I'll take a look at it later but I thought you could tell the two apart because the neutral safety switch had a pair of red/blue striped wires which were the circuit for it?

You probably can except for the fact that all my wires are painted black from one of my "detailing" jobs. Plus, I wasn't that smart when I was younger.

I can give you the factory wiring diagram if you need it, email me at ac.rad@verizon.net and I'll send it to you.

Couple of checks you can do;

unplug both the small wires on the solinoid, turn the key on and make sure only one of them is hot.

Attach the hot one to the "I" terminal to make sure it doesn't crank over,(could be the solinoid is internally shorted between teh 2 terminals.

Now with the hot lead on the "I" terminal, short the "S" terminal to 12 volts and let it start, make sure the starter stops turning after it is running and you remove the 12 volts.

after it's running, make sure the Start wire in the harness is dead, it may be shorted in the ignition switch.

Thanks Worth, but I figured out the problem a long time ago and fixed it. I still don't have a neutral safety switch though. I just made a kill switch instead.
