anyone heard of 289 DOE or Dove heads?

My buddy has a set of these for sale for $75. I asked him what would be a good valve to run and stuff he said a 2.02 and a 1.60 would be good. This is for a daily driver so I guess this would be good.
How much do you think it would cost me to get then ported and polished and the shop. He said the kit for the valve springs,studs and the valves would cost $190.00 he said these are chevy valves.

the last production year for 289 in a mustang was 67, with limited carry over until 68 where they were putting 302's into them.

Ive read that 289's were put into other cars until 69 but it was the excess blocks. but I do not believe they were making 289's in 1970 (D0E)

I would be wary if the guy does not know what he has.


having the bigger chevy valves put into heads is pretty common. but 75 bucks could buy you 7 pairs of early rebuildable 302/289 heads. They are about a dime a dozen if you source them right.

Plus if you bought the heads $75, then the kit $190 the machine work and assembly (rough estimate $300) you would be right around $565 and up. You would be right about half way to a set of aluminum heads, or some bolt on iron heads that have been thouroughly worked.

I think that maybe you mean D0OE as in D "Zero, "O", E" heads, stock 69 windsor heads. I have these heads stock in my windsor and they run like an S.O.B., I love beating my buddy in their late models with 302's. They come stock with I believe 1.94, and 1.64's. What you're talking about sounds like a good deal. Just make sure they really are D0OE heads.

D0OE heads are 70 model heads, of the casting number will determine if it is a 302 or 351 head, i don't remember right off what the rest of the number would be. stock valve size would be 1.84 I/1.54 E. about the best flowing early model head out there, if they are worked right. but i agree with HM once you spend the money on valves and machine work you will have spent a good deal of money that could be used on a better set of heads. check out www.powerheads.com you can a set of early castings with 1.4/1.60 valves that have been cnc ported and have screw in studs and guideplates installed including springs etc. for about 675 bucks. you'll spend close to that just having your buddies heads ported, not uncluding valves etc.
