Gotta put on this explorer manifold and clutch... and i think i might of gotten in over my head to try to do both by my self... just wanted to see if anyone was willing to help me out... kinda low on cash but i will pay someone if it comes down to it... But basically i just want some help with it because i really wanna learn... i think i might be able to do it on my own... but i dont have air tools or anything... ive been reading the write up for the manifold... and i get confused about turning the ditsy to 1 oclock rotor and what not... i think this is TDC... and doing **** like this bothers me because im always scared to **** something up...

I was in your shoes not to long ago. I never did a clutch though. But the intake is so easy. You cant go wrong. Dont worry about the Distributer till the end, and thats easy. Just take out your number one spark plug, stick in a screw driver till it hits the piston. Then turn the motor clockwise and watch the screw go up or down depending were it was now try to get it as high as possible. That should be TDC. Now with the distributer put te rotor pointing at the number one on the cap. Now turn it about 1/4 of the way to the left, then stick the dizzy in. The cam gear will turn the dizzy gear and kinda line up the dizzy to be even with the one, that should get you close enough to start your car and set your timing with a timing light

the dist is intimidiating at first

i would pickup a timing light (35-40 for a decent one at pepboys)

before you take the dist out, take a magic marker and mark where the pointer is inside the cap. then also mark on the base of the dist and block so you can line it all back up on installation without worring about finding TDC or any of that jazz

also be sure to write down your plug wires/firing order. really easy to get a wire or 2 swapped on accident.

oh also a tip for the clutch swap... when your taking the starter out (dont forget to disconnect the batt!!) use a few long extensions and go from the front of the motor to get that top bolt

The dist is SO easy. I did my first one last week and was intimidated but it was so easy. Basically you make the rotor pioint to 12 o'clock. Which is TDC for cyl #1. Remove it by undoing the one bolt and pulling it straight up. Insert the new one with the rotor pointing around 11 o'clock and when it meshes with the cam gear it will move to 12 o'clock, if not the remove it to get it right. I got it mright on the second try.

As for the clutch, you will need some help, its just not a one man job unless you have a tranny jack and a lift.

i gotta take the intake off so it would still be in the way there
Why are you changing the dist anyway? just do one at a time. The intake really isnt in the way of the dist. And its not that big of a deal to have to re-wire the plugs to the cap.

hes swapping intakes so he has to pull the dist

to swap the clutch you need to remove the bellhousing, which means remove the starter.

the top bolt is a PAIN to get to with a rachet. i fought with a swivel for 10-15 mins before i noticed i could go straight at it with a few long extensions.

I dont remember having to take the starter off.

And just line the rotor up @ 12 o'clock when before you take it off, then take it off, remove intake, install new intake, install dist. Simple as that. (hopefully)

What starter?

how do you line up the rotor on the ditsy... do you crank it from the UD pulley??? also how do you use a timing light to set the timing i havent used one... but im friends with someone that has a shop so i can borrow one or just go get a cheap one used... If i get the ditsy in right... will i even have to adjust the timing? I guess this would also be a good time to do my plugs n wires... i hate the fact that this car is my DD

yeah you can be way of still. there only like 40 bucks at pep boys. Turn the engine by turnng the Harmolic Balancer.

The starter is around the bell housing????

Yes teeth are hooked to the flywheel...

How do you use the timing light??? and where is the harmolic balancer located at... bottom pulley or what??? pic would be awesome...

sorry for all the questions... I dont have anyone to help me with the clutch... none of my friends are really in to cars... my one friend was gonna just do it for me but now he wants $200 and id really wanna learn... but im thinking about doing this intake my self... elbow should be here soon... i might take it to get p/c'd but i dont know... OH and for gaskets should i just go to autozone and ask for gaskets fr a 97 explorer... or do i just buy a tube of rtv.... or both??? lol

yeah its the lowest pulley.

On the third pick you can kinda see the numbers for your timing. For the timing light, you connect it to your battery, then the plug that hooks goes into your number 1 spark plug. The first time i did this it scared the crap out of me cuz it looks like it doens't move i thought i messed something up. Any how make sure you disconnect the spout before starting your car when setting your timing

Timing light is even easier. It has 3 leads. 2 go to the battery. One pos. & one neg. The other lead has a clip that attaches to the #1 spark plug wire. Decide what timing you want to set it at (i.e. 12 deg.). Use a white-out pen and mark it on the harmonic balancer. (or you can just scribe it or scratch it with a screwdriver or something). Start car. Turn gun on. Point it at the timing mark. You will see the light flash at one certain point on the balancer every time it turns. If it's not on your mark ..... barely loosen the dizzy bolt & carefully turn it until the mark lines up. Easy as that. I'll see if I can find that pic of the timing mark for you ......

Oh, and the harmonic balancer is the bottom pulley. It has #'s etched into it.
