Anyone know the legal requirements with NO2 in your car?

Ok, I got pulled over today, the officer was being pretty cool, so I was laid back, gave him my info, I keep my portfolio in the other car so i did not have any proof of insurance, or anything in the car. So as he is running my licencse and such another officer pulls up behind him. This guy obviously is the brains of orange county police department, cause he comes up and starts giving me the third degree. Asking me what my gages are for, and why i have "racing tires" on my car if i dont race on the street.. I am like WTF.. My girl drove my regular car to work, and i had to get somewhere. Then he asks me if i have nitrous, because obviously its illegal to have in a car that is drivin on the stret... ??? yea.. uh huh. I tell him I got all these gauges cause I have a very expensive motor and i like to know what its doing, and no i dont have nitrous(hahaaa, which i do, but the bottle is hardley ever in the car...) Anyways.. to make a long story short. I have heard all the stories from joe guy, whose friend had a cousin that got pulled over with his nitrous on.. Has anyone got in trouble for this... I dont even understand, my bottle was in the car, and hooked up... hell even on... How would an officer know if the valve was on or off without me tellin him?? Just a question...

I thought it was allowed in the car as long as it was only used on the track, but hell I don't know. I'm sure California is more strict on stuff like that than other states.

You can have it setup, but from my understanding the bottle cannot be hooked up. The bottle may not even be able to be in the car.

Hah. In Manitoba, you can have your nitrous spraying as long as you abide by all other motor vehicle laws

Eh, like i said my bottle is in the car about 5% of the time I drive it, so its not really an issue. I was just a little heated when i got home and wondered if anyone else had that problem..

I, found no reference to Nitrous in The 2006 Vehicle Code Book for California traffic laws and driving rules. In fact, many NOS systems have received certification for 50-state emissions legal use in the United States. I see no problems in having one installed, unless you used it in a high speed chase.

I've been told that the nitrous bottle cannot be hooked up/turned on.

IMO, the best way to find out any legal details about nitrous, would be to go to or call the local police department and ask.

I have been pulled over plenty over the years and the officers always flash the light in or in the day just do a visual look in the car. I always have them ask about the cars specs after seeing gauges, shift light and the bottle but never once have they said a word about it being on the car.

I'll check with my brother, he's an FHP trooper, and I can give you the low down on what is legal and illegal in FL. I used to drive around all the time with my bottle hooked up but the valve off. I'll post it up tomorrow.

I know that the laws vary from state to state. Some places don't care while others you have to have the bottle disconnected while its on the road.

Its completely rediculous. Kinda like making guys with an SC run around with no belt until they are at the track.

i know certain state require you have a permit to carry the nitrous.

For at least some states all you need is a permit to carry Nitrous in the car, at least in New Jersey I think. When you go to get the permit your basically agreeing your not gonna use it on the street and gonna save it for the track.

If they require that you can't have the bottle in the car then yes I can see your point. Then we are talking about safety and the possiblity of the bottle exploding.

However when their only requirement is that you have the bottle disconnected it is an apple to apples discussion because they are preventing you from using the nitrous in an attempt to discourage street racing.

edit: I just spoke with my brother and he knows of no statutes in the state of FL than ban having a bottle in the car and hooked up. But if you end up getting caught racing then they will undoubtedly use the fact that you have a nitrous set up on your car against you.

yea, I figured there was not really too much they could say about it unless you get pulled over for racing. I got pulled over for the dumbest reason.. I had red lights over my tags on the back.. I swear, I think i did that when I was like 16.. at least 8 years ago.. at least. I totally forgot. Like i said.. i think they just wanted to check me out... and it all my info came back clean so they let me leave. Like I said, i am the most courteous person, I know they are just doing there job, so i give them more than enough respect.. but its still a hassle sometimes...

no... its not directly apples to apples.

Nitrous CAN be used safely.. but the bottle blowing up ISNT the only saftey issue with it. A nitrous backfire from the engine while in use can cause serious problems.. so its NOT just a apples to apples comparision when comparing a blower to a bottle. you get it?

remote bottle openers make it possible to APPEAR dissconnected.. but the ability to but the system in use is at the touch of a button... meaning, if there IS a law formed for any reason.. it should undoubtly require the complete removale of the bottle.

Just know that im not arguing what the laws on nitrous are, because I don't know. I do know however, that any way you cut it nitrous will not be safer than a blower. Its not directly apples to apples.. thats the only point in trying to make.

I understand where you are coming from.

Unfortunately most laws concerning nitrous are merely a knee jerk response to street racing. Not for safety issues as you have mentioned. If that were the case then I wouldn't have a problem with them. However in most lots of people minds if you have nitrous on your car it means that you have it on there to street race. If you have a an automatic bottle open it just screams street racer. Personally I think they have no place on a street car. One reason why I don't have one, that an their expensive as hell.

A properly tuned nitrous set up with the proper safety equipment, i.e. window switch, WOT switch is just as safe as a blower or turbo. The problems arise when people cheap out and cut corners.

It's illegal to have the bottles in the car in MD. They quietly passed the law about 10 to 15 years ago. Their concerns were with having an oxidizer in close quarters to an accelerant. I guess if you were to have those D.O.T. plackards declaring an oxidizer on both sides of the car like they have on tractor trailers then it would be legal.
