I had a hard time finding oil pump gaskets in stock at the local auto parts store. I need the gaskets for the pump and pickup. Summit only carries the pickup gasket and I'm not about to pay 9 bucks to ship that here

So, I picked up some gasket material (Pinkish paper sheet) and cut them out to the same dimensions as the stock gaskets I took out, those were black but also paper

Just curious whether or not there could be any issues with doing that. I really hate to make a day project out of hunting down a piece of paper if I can just cut my own. At the same time I want to do things right.

I have made gaskets for lawn mower engines using the ball end of a ball pien hammer. The ball causes the sharp metal egdes to cut the gasket material in the exact shape as the part. Tap lightly around the perimeter and it cuts the gasket to shape.

Just use RTV. Its much more effective.

If you smear it paper thin then it wont bulge out when the two surfaces press together.

Any place other than the oil pump/pickup may be ok with just silicone.

I would not suggest skipping out on the gasket on the oil pickup.
One little leak and your oil pressure is GONE.
Pulling the pan is the only way to repair the gasket.

Better to get it right, than take the risk.

Most parts stores stock the same gasket material (gray paper, but a little thicker).
