anyone run 4.30 gears on a daily driver?

i am thinking of getting some 4.30 gears, does anyone have them on their daily driver? also is there anything else besides the gears an gear oil i will need to buy to have them installed? thanks

50Tony does. PM him. It would be a good idea to replace the pinion bearing and seal while your in there as well. Remember to get a bottle of friction modifier for the posi. I could be wrong, but I believe the only way to correct the speedo (dead-on) with that steep of a gear would be to use the Speedcal from Dallas Mustang.

yea summit sells this : FMS-M-4210-C Installation Kit Ring & Pinion 8.8" Ford Complete W/Axle Bearings & Seals

its the ford racing installation kit, is it really needed or could i do without it? also is the friction modifier really needed to? or are they both just good to replace? actually a complete list of what i will need will really help, thanks

ok so far on my list is : 1)ford racing 4.30 gears
2) either ford racing or ratech complete installation kit
with wheel bearings and seals included
3) gear oil (how many bottles?)
4) Friction modifier (how many bottles?)


anything else?

Unless you want to replace all the wheel bearings and axle seals, I wouldn't buy the complete installation kit. It is a good idea to replace all those bearings and what not, but the question is do you want to spend the money to replace them. If not, a new pinion bearing and pinion seal will be plenty for the install. I believe the rear takes two quarts of gear oil, although I would buy 3 just to be on the safe side. Friction modifier is absolutely necessary. That is the "special formula" which lubricates the clutches in the posi traction.

4.30s are pretty steep dude, are you sure you wont run out of rpm in 4th gear before you finish the quarter???

one bottle friction modifier... 2 bottles of gear oil, but 3 to play safe.

All right I won't be one of the only ones running 4.30 gears. And they said I was crazy LOL! now I will hafta run 4.56 and see how many would do it. LOL! J/K Here is what I did I used 4.30 gears with friction modifyer about 3 qts of Synthetic Gear Lube And yes It does make a difference!! I also used the rebuild kit the one without the wheel bearings and do replace the bearings in there now matter how good they look take it from me you do not wanna do this anymore than ya have to! Have a good shop do the install to make sure the backlash is good and have fun by the way there is no correction for speedo. I am using the one for a 3.73 gear and it will be off by about 12 MPH in your favor so if you are doing 70 you are really doing about 58-60. Have fun any questions give me a holler! my friends car has 4.56s. like they say, torque wins races........to a certain point anyways


should i use synthetic gear oil or regular? does it make a difference?

do i only have to use a 4 ounce bottle of friction modfier or do i need more? summit sells 4 ounce bottles.

i dont think im gonna replace the wheel bearings, if its not broken dont fix it i guess.

i run 4:30's on my daily driver, dont have any complaints. in the 1/8 my car is at redlined right when i pass the lights in 3rd 4th doesnt fun out before you get to the end of the 1/4 either

Guys, you can compensate for your speedo gear. Get a 6 tooth speedo gear for the tail shaft of the trans, and either a 20 or 21 tooth for the outter gear. I bet a 20 tooth would work as the 19 is about dead on with my 4.10's. Check out hanlon's site, he has a nice speedo calc on there and it will tell you for sure.

I just checked it and I was right assuming a stock 225-55-16 tire, use the 6 tooth inner and 20 tooth outer and it will be close to dead on. My dad has this setup in his 91GT only he has a TKO, but he still runs a 6 tooth inner and a 20 tooth outer. His car is not daily driven though. He's trapping around 115mph and is somewhere near 6300rpms at the line. Here's the link...

I've heard conflicting reports on using synthetic oils with clutch based differentials. I ran it in my factory T-lok without problems but only for a few months, it did leak out the pinion seal even after it was replaced twice. I now have an eaton and they say absolutely do not use synthetic oil in with their posi unit.

Thats all the friction modifier you need. You still need the 3 quarts of gear oil too.

You are gonna have some fun with those gears.

I ran 4.56's in light weight 66 mustang with a top loader 4 speed trans on the street for a good while.

Under certain conditions in 3rd & 4th gear you will loose traction so watch out.

When crusing in 4th gear at about 30 to 40 mph and you mash the skinny pedal it just rocks your world
