I'm buying a new T5 for my daily driver '89 GT. As of now I have full exhaust, street heat intake,70mm throttle body , CAI and 3:73's. I'm looking to get trick flow heads and a cam over the summer. Does anyone happen to have any feedback on the T5Z and will it hold up behind a h/c/i car?

It all depends on how you drive the thing, if you are manhandling the transmission all the time like you stole the thing then the chances are higher for breaking something. If this isn't you then I wouldn't even bother going with a T5Z compared to the current T5 you have (I am assuming it is a world class unit). I doubt the extra 30 ft lb torque rating really means much in the grand scheme of things.

I had a T5Z in my old 89 and it was a HCI car. I used to beat on it pretty good and it never hiccuped once. However, I never ran it with slicks/DR's, didn't do a lot of burnouts, etc. I guess it depends on how you drive. The trans guy that built it had a good rep and told me I wasn't going to break it.

I love mine, car would probably be sold if I didn't have the T5z trans. reason being is I have 4.30 gears that the previous owner installed, he also had a 4cyl T5 so I went from a 3.9* first gear ration down to a 2.9* first gear ratio and got a much more efficient OD gear.

I would go for it.

I'm running an astro performance "z" spec T5. I like it, I don't beat the heck out of it for one although I do get on it once in awhile but it should handle it fine. A good aftermarket shifter ( I have the MGW one) also helps for missing shifts vs the crappy stocker. I also like the drop in rpm I got with taller gears that the Z has over the stock T5 with my 3:73 gears, it's only a few hundred but it makes a difference to me.

Thanks for the input guys I'm going to order a T5Z soon. I love how it has a 2.95 1st gear which would be nice with my 3:73's.

If you are going to "order" a transmission, order from Tony @ astro performance. Very helpful and full of experience. Thats where I got mine aswell.
