I have a black magic fan from Fal on my 89GT, just wondering if anyone else has problems with this fan moving enough air.

When i had the stock 302 in it with a 160 thermostat is would run around 180 just like i wanted until it was above 85 degrees or so outside. Then it would run anywhere from 205-215 just cruising. If you pulled hard through the gears it got up to about 220+ :(

After putting together my dss stroker, new thermostat (160), water pump, flushed the radiator very well, and of course the heads are new and different block it still does the same thing.

I checked to make sure the fan is pulling, it is. I have a Ron Davis aluminum radiator with the fan. The temp gauge i am using is an autometer.

I'm just not sure if maybe i need a better fan or what.

Any ideas?

yes the black magic is on my stang and in stop and go traffic I would say this thing doesnot pull enough air. The black magic extreme is supposed to have fixed the issue. I would say the fact that the black magic doesn't have a shroud that covers the entire rad is the biggest issue.

i always thought it was that fan, a not to reputable shop owner told me it it would do the job.

i just seen a thread with people using tauras fans, i might go that route

It was the fan to have but i really think that it is only suited for stock 302 cars. The extra HP we through at our cars increase the heat they produce and the fan can't keep up. You didn't mention if you have a alt upgrade. The electric fans suck power and it is a good idea to have a 3g alt upgrade to make sure the fan is turning the way it should.

That will probably be a whole different thread in itself lol

I have a stock alternator with an over drive pulley. It seemed to work great as far as i can remember before i blew up the stock engine, then the car sat for almost 3 years until i saved up money for the stroker and TKO, in this time i relocated the battery to the trunk. Now at night with the lights on and the fan running the volts are pretty low, but they might have always been like that. The starter used to turn slow on a hot start, not it almost doesn't turn at all on a hot start, but then again i used to have shorty headers and now i have full lengths. so i can't decide if it is just the heat on the starter or the long ass power wire trying to turn over that heat soaked starter that is the problem.

I had to relocate the msd box, i had it where the battery was but then everytime i washed the car the box would short out and i would have to bypass it for about three days until it dried out. So now i could just put the battery back up front if i wanted to

I have so many little issues that could be one of two or three things with this car that i don't know where to start, so i figured i would start with the most important, the engine cooling, now it will probably snow ball into a bunch of other **** lol

Yah I would start with the alt. My car climbs to 210 degrees maybe 215 in stop and go. So i think one of your issues is definetally the fan not getting the power it needs so it s probably turning slower then it should.

I use a Flexalite electric fan with an FRPP alum radiator, temp never gets over 195 which is thermostat I use.

Also, I've had a Protorque ministarter for 4 years with LT headers, never missed a beat.

I swapped to a mini starter when my factory crapped out because of the heat aswell. Much nicer piece to work with. How much HP are you pushing? I have the FRPP alum rad aswell but in stop and go traffic in the summer heat I get above 210.

I have the Black magic in my DD for 2 1/2yrs and it never gave me a problem, I have a 3G and a brass 3 row radiator and underdrive pulleys. I just drove it today in 85* weather, I have a 195* thermo, my temps on my mechanical gauge were 187-190* crusing and a steady 203* if idling for a while. I'm gonna switch to a 180* when the weather gets hotter.

When your cuising ram air should be cooling the radiator and the fan should be off, do you have that flap under the car that draws air to the raidiator?

fan

I've read lots of threads like yours in my searching for a fan. Seems like the Black Magics are marginal at best.

For the money I think a Taurus fan and a DCC controller is a way better buy than a Black Magic fan.

I hope to have mine installed this weekend. :nice:
