I have a preety-much stock 02 GT vert stick. Want a bit loader outside,no drone inside and more power up top. I only want to swap out the mufflers. Has anyone tried the brand new black Flowmaster "Super 40's". Apparently they are a LOT better than the ones they are replacing (you'll notice lot's of places are discounting their existing stock of Flow's to make way for these...)

with just a muffler install you will gain very little horsepower if any. mufflers mostly for sound. straight-thru will give u little bit more then chambered(flows). where you make your hp in an exhaust is in the headers, and midpipe

true: HP/TQ = headers and mid pipe

I think that maybe the American Thunder kit for 99-04 GT's comes with the super 40's cause the mufflers on that kit are 5" x 11" instead of the regular 4" x 9" and when I bought this kit you could not order a 40 series muffler with the larger dimension cause my buddy tried to order just the mufflers and you could not get them. What do you guys think?

I have the american thunder kit on my 02 Gt , if it does have the super 40s ive not noticed any difference in sound from my old 87 LX 5.0 with the american thunder kit on it . They are bigger in size though definitely .

If you get yourself a full 2-1/2 cat back system (no larger), you'll definitely improve horse power. When my 02 GT was stock I had it dyno tuned on an MD mustang chassis before and after the install in fear of loosing torque but gained torque and 8rwhp arcoss the board, lost some hp but gained 4rwhp up top with an x-pipe, and gained 12 rwhp with mac long tube headers. It's coincidental that Rick Anderson gained somewhat similar numbers on his GT 00 project. Check out February's 2004 issue of 5.0, it should already be out, if not soon. No doubt, the best issue yet for 99+ GT owners.

I don't understand how a 2.5" cat back is any better than stock with swapped mufflers? Stock is 2.5" all the way from the cat back anyway, the only other thing on the exhaust from the cat back is the muffler...? Or am I wong?

the stock catback is 2.25'' in diameter. It is not mandrel bent unlike all the 2.5'' catbacks which never go below 2.5''. the stock catback goes to 1.75'' i've heard when looping around the rear axel. So, there are a few horses to be gained from changing catbacks, but not a whole lot in most cases based on what i've read.

even a catback isnt going to give you much... just put a off road x in there with the stock mufflers, thats whats i would do, better sound and better performance!

I added just the 40 series mufflers, the rest of my exhaust is stock, I noticed a small power gain, but it sounds great. I do plan on adding headers and an x pipe though.

I just got my Super40's installed and they sound very nice.
Louder than stock, low tone, and have a nice crackle when getting off the gas.
I'll probably be adding a Dr. Gas X-pipe to it in the future.
Not sure about the HP or Torque gain.
It's is possible I've actually lost a bit
I got the Super40's installed 2 days after my 4.10's so it is hard to tell anything about power at this point.
