I'm just trying to find a nice "new" valve cover that will fit over my Scorpion 1.6 stud mounted roller rockers and under my stock gasketed Performer intake...

Let's here what you guys are running under and over that valve cover...

My 93 valve covers fit fine over the roller rockers after I took out the oil baffle completly...no ill effects...just for comparison...

I'm trying to avoid modifing as much as possible but tell me what you guys did to get it to work with your parts...and the intake spacer is out of the question...I want to maintain the stock hood... :nice:

I have a set like that, from ebay.

It has a oil baffel under the spout you have to remove.... well i had to with my 1.72 stud mount rockers.

anyhow it unscrews. i ground out the studs for more room...

ona word to the wise... dont use the gaskets with the metal compression stops in them. remove the metal stops or they will crack the valve covers!! I had to weld up 2 cracks in mine ... i learned the hard way... they are real nice covers! I have a 1/2 inch spacer But they wil clear with out a spacer to.

5.0droptop - Good so I'm assuming (even as big as the 1.6's Scorpion stud mounted are)...it should fit fine right...? Thanks for the help and pic :nice:

Well I cracked my stock aluminum ones on a cork gasket :( ...and had to remove the oil baffle completely to get them to fit...

I think I'll leave the compression rings in (OEM VC gasket)...but I'll just be very careful :D ...

Anybody else run these valve covers...? Just for a confirmation...I dont' want to spend close to $200 bucks and find out they don't work on a "college kids" salary...

I hope to have clearance with the OEM valve cover gaskets ...

they will work. You may have to remove the baffel and do a bit of grinding. The compression rings are the same size as the bolt holes in the covers so the problem is they try to squeeze in and crack the covers. Trust me on this. Dont use the rings.

My 1.72 rockers are huge.

Looks good...those are pretty big rockers...

How much should I torque the valve covers to...I guess I'll look at the valve cover gaskets when I get them and see how to take out the metal rings...why do they put them in if they are not good...?

I appreciate the help and pictures...

the rings slip right out. they work well with STOCK covers. But not with these.

So you see no problems with these valve covers on AFR 165's while matched with the OEM gaskets and those valve covers will work...I was wondering if the AFR's make it any different...

How much should I torque them down to?

I have them on my afr 165 heads. I dont torq them I just sung them down untill tight.

The only issue will be if the rockers will clear the baffle. the best way to test is to set the cover on with no gasket and turn the motor over with a 15/16 socket on the crank bolt. if it lifts up the cover then youll have to remove the baffle and try again. if it moves the cover again youll have to grind out the places where the screws screwed into the cover for the baffle.

btw we have similar combos.
i have the afr 165's tfs 1 cam forged probe flat tops, forged cnc profiled sportsman rods, nodular crank arp studs a girdles etc cobra intake ported lower by tmoss. i have about 150 miles on it now.. still breaking it in.

Lol...that is how I "originally" tightened down the valve cover bolts and well...CRACK! :D ...I guess I need to be a bit more conservative...

Yeah I was thinking about that way to find out on clearance...or just disconnect the coil distributor wire and turn it over...

I adjust my valves by turning over the motor with a breaker bar and 15/16 socket so that is probably how I will check it...

Thanks for all the info...I remember your "combo" from a while back in a thread...you've got a nice car :hail2:

So I guess I'm going to buy those valve covers, take out the rings from the OEM gaskets and I'm set...I found a cheaper place for those valve covers which is Summit at $152 bucks...so I'll save about $20 bucks :nice:

Did your valve covers come with the oil fill tube already attached so I don't have to have some one aluminum weld it?

Use the metal/rubber composite gaskets - they are the best are eliminate the overtightening issue. The bolts are small - unless you have an "Inch-pounds" torque wrench don't bother with the wrench. Just put the correct size socket on the smallest ratchet wrench you have - or better yet on a screw-driver-type handle. Just hand snug them. They're not sealing oil under pressure - so they don't have to be as tight as folks think.

I'd ask 5.0Resto if they fit so you have someone on the hook allowing a return if they don't. Do they have the nipple on the filler neck for the pcv-system-related hose from the throttle body to that nipple? Otherwise you'll have to vent the valve cover some way. I went for the stealth look (kind of like the whole car) on mine and used factory 93 model Cobra valve covers. Painted them the same Ford gray as the rest of the engine. Just a plain looking stamped steel cover.

Here is the same valve covers I'm looking at getting...click on the Large Image and you can see the nipple on the oil fill tube...I'm guessing that is what your talking about...so it appears it is already on there...on my stock valve covers I got them and the tube points against the valve cover and down...

Trust me I'm not wanting these for "flash" ...I just want a new valve cover that will work...plus their black so their is limited amount of flash :)

Get what YOU like - that's all that matters. They are black on the sides, but it's the top that shows; those silver stripes/Cobra logo will appear pretty 'flashy'. 'Course, if you don't want any flash, just lightly sand them and paint the whole thing satin black - that'll tone down the flash factor!
