Anyone with a solid steering shaft?

I was looking at one of these. Either MM or flaming river. I REALLY need to tighten up the play in my steering wheel. My current set up is Reman rack, new inner rod ends, Steeda bump steer outer, and an 03 steering shaft out of a wrecked 03. I am wondering if it got messed up in the crash because i dont know what kind of wreck it was. I got it for like 10 bucks so i didnt care at the time. But i would say it has about an inch of play side to side before the front wheels move at all. I hate it. Im hoping the solid shaft will clean it up. Also how is the NHV on it? Is it worse that stock? A lot?

Im running the MM shaft and love it. Absolutely zero play, major diff from stock. I should have done it a long time ago.

That sounds good but aren't the ydangerous if you get into an accident? I mean,, isn't that the purpose of a 2 piece .. so it breaks of and dont spear thru your head? Correct me if I am off on this one guys..

it is still a 2 piece shaft...at least the flaming river unit is.

I have one from MM. Tightened up the steering but I still have some play. I think it must be the rack itself. That or I just expect it to be too perfect.

The main steering column (from wheel to engine bay) is colapsable that is what saves you from being speared.

I've got the MM shaft and it has the same safety mechanism as the stocker. The only difference is that the MM does not use rubber bushings. The bushings are metal, however, I have not noticed any NVH.

My steering is better than when the car was new now that I have the MM stuff. I used to own an Acura RSX for a couple years and that's when I realized that some newer cars simply have more advanced steering systems that are spot on.

The Cobra shaft has rubber bushings, just like our stockers, so they're going to wear out over time. The MM shaft should never wear out, because all parts are metal.

I had heard that the rubber bushings wear out quicker IF most of your miles are on the highway/interstate, because most of the time your steering wheel is in the same position (going straight). This wears out a specific area of the bushing over a relatively long period of time, so the steering gradually gets worse with more play.

As far as the stocker bushings wearing out on the stock steering shaft quickly. I really dont believe that. Mine are still nice and solid and they are 13 years old now and I spray it every now and then with silicone spray to keep them maintained, highway I really have no play, theres only pretty little play at a stop.

Sorry, I should have been more clear: Not quickly..........more like "gradually" over several years and that all depends on your type of driving. For instance, 80% or more of my driving for the first 8 years was interstate. If it had only been 20% on interstates, then the bushings would have lasted longer and/or would have taken longer for me to notice play.

I had noticeable play in the steering for the last 3 or 4 years, but since the new MM shaft was installed a couple weeks ago, there is no play at all. Steering feels/reacts better and the feedback is a little better too.

A stock replacement shaft will actually do just fine for many years. Most people probably never spray those bushings, but that's interesting that yours have held up well with no play.
