Anyone with info on VW 1.8T Passat, GTI, whatever

I'm looking at getting a Passat or Jetta 1.8T as a daily driver and I was wondering if any of you guys have any good info on them. I'm mainly looking for stuff that should be serviced at certain mileages and such. Oh and I'm keeping my mustang, so no flaming for that lol.
So any info on VW, please post!!!

jetta all the way, they are lots of fun, get the 6 speed unit, believe me you wont regret it!! if I had some more income id have a jetta or an audi, or an L as a daily.

my bro has an 02 337 gti, man that thing is so much fun to drive, rides so nice and smooth 28mpg and is still pretty fast with the chip.

Ummmmm....yeah, about the Jetta and Passat.

By the way, I'm an insurance broker, therefore I sell warranties for different vehicles ALL day long.

I have, in my hands, the Consumer Report for the BEST and WORST cars in every category (fullsize, midsize, truck, SUV, etc.) for the year 2007.

Can anybody guess what's the 2nd worst rated small car on the market behind the Chevrolet Cobalt? You got it, the Volkswagen Jetta! So have fun.

Let's move on to the family cars, shall we? Wow! There it is right at the top, Volkswagen Passat. Again, have yourself a blast.

Surprisingly, all the domestics rated right in the middle with Mercury on top, followed by Lincoln, GMC, Ford, Buick, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Dodge, and Chrysler.

So LET'S GO FORD BABY!

Oh yeah....the best vehicle in the year 2007 is the Toyota, in almost EVERY category!

My buddy and his wife HAD an '03 Passat 1.8T and still have an '03 Jetta. They will NEVER own another VW again, and based on their experience I would have a hard time buying one myself. I'm talking based on second hand knowledge but do a google search for VW 1.8t sludge and enjoy the read. My friends Passat ended up failing due to the sludge issue and they were denied warranty coverage because they had missed an oil change by 2000 miles. The Jetta is just a constant problem with various electrical systeml malfunctions.

Change that timing belt at 80,000. I hear they have a tendency to fail after that.

If wanting info from a guy who works at a VW shop (for a fix-it angle), try PMing Nik 95 Cobra (I cant remember where the spaces are in his username. In the time it took to type this thought up, I could have looked up his username . ).

He's still personally into the VW scene as well (just sold his GTI or something-or-other).

I just got an Audi 1.8T a week or two ago. I did some research and heard a lot of good about the driveline. I never heard of a sludge issue, or read about one. I have heard of timing belts going, and electrical issues.

As far as fun, stock they are alright, but nothing special. My Audi feels decent through boost, but down low and way up top its sluggish at best. The beauty is, toss a chip on it, and the car wakes right up. The cars are definately nicely built, solid and fun to drive.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Now I'm really on the fence... I read up on the sludge issues (good God there were lots of complaints x_x) and it's got me kinda worried. I'll have to see if they have a complete service history. Also, apparently the passat eats its own suspension components up front? yeesh. Maybe I'll look into newer Maximas.

I've been seriously thinking about a WRX. The STi is a little bit pricey... I just think I might have a problem with driving it in the snow
Maybe the WRX for summer daily, Jeep for winter daily and mustang for weekends. Bleh.

HELLL NOOO i had a WRX.. an 03.. that thing was a rocket thru the snow!!!! stopped like every other car in the snow but still it drove real nice thru the snow!

The WRX would be a great compromise. I would have looked into them when going for the Audi, but they were similar money, and had none of the options I wanted. We own a 2.5 RS though and it has been a great car. With the WRX motor and a 5-speed it would be tons of fun!

I own a 2005 Jetta GLI (Reacro edition) 6 speed, looked very sharp when I purchased it a year ago. I chipped the turbo, and the thing is like a little rocket.
I liked the car for about a month and then it started to fall apart. To include a few of the little problems.
1. interior finish is pealing off.
2. traction control, no workie
3. check engine light on ( bad mass airflow sensor)
3. bumper falling off.
4. sunroof likes to refuse to shut.
5. trim falls of at random times.
6. for some strange reason the finish used on rims is alergic to brake dust, and the finish pitted and was ruined after three weeks of not washing the rims.

there is much more that im sure that im not thinking about. My friend warned me about Vw and Audi but i failed to listed to him, so please take it from a stranger. Save yourslef the heartache and buy a honda as a daily driver, or just pay cash for another stock fox body.

x_x wow, that's pretty lame for an '05... I think I've heard enough to steer clear for now. Civics, Maximas and WRXs are on my shopping list right now.

I have owned 6 VWs from Aircooled Bugs to a Golf and in between all were good vehicles, I bought my Golf New and had it for 11 Years and 200,000 Miles before I lost it in an accident, I would still have it today if it wasnt for the accident.

Hey sorry to bring back up a thread that already kindof old but I have one comment about VeeDubs they CAN be really quick upgrading the turbo on a 1.8t for example but they drivers are comple a-holes with serious problems with mustangs because of our build quality for that reason I would stay away from them
