I had my T-5 rebuilt last year with a hanlon block & ring kit, and havent touched it since. i decided to take the top cover off to inspect everything to make sure it all looks happy before i start bolting it to the motor...

1 problem... I CANT GET THE DAMN TOP COVER OFF !!!!

I looked at this website: http://pomoforacing.com/tech/T5Rebuild2002.pdf
which provided alot of great info, and i read the top cover removal instructions, but i still cannot get the damn thing off. it says to slide it towards the passenger side, and then pull up to clear the reverse mechanism, but the rod that attaches to the shifter is in the way.

I cant figure out if the rod is supposed to slide back towards the shifter and out of the top cover, or if the rod stays in place, and im supposed to slide the cover off of it, while the rod remains stationary.

i hope someone can help me out, im including pictures of where im stuck at

this first picture is to show where the rod goes through. from the shifter all the way to the front of the tranny

the rod comes off with the cover. best way to do it is the take the part that the shifter sits in off and than take the tail housing off. make sure you dont loose the spring and detent ball when you take the shifter part off the rod

ps. youll be hard pressed to get that cover off with the tail housing in place since the cover has the shift forks attached to it

im trying to figure out if this is what slides through towards the front of the tranny ( i kept the spring, and the little ball bearing jobbie as well as the shifter pin )

that doesnt matter i dont think. but there should be a pin or bolt that holds the lower shifter to the rod. pull that off the rod and the tail shaft will come off and than the cover will come off easily

also, when you go to put it back together make sure that the shift rod is set up right with the shift forks or it wont shift. its hard to explain but youll see what i mean when you get it off

Thanks for the info man, i really appreciate it... this thing was kickin my @ss last night.. i didnt realize i had to take the tailshaft off... that seems like my whole problem... that website didnt have a picture of actually removing that cover, and thats what threw me off..

Ok, i got it apart, and saw exactly what you meant about having to line up the shift forks. I have it all cleaned (have to take the tailshaft to the machine shop to get the speedo gear bolt hole re-tapped.. dont ask long story) but what is the best sealant to use when i put it all back together? when i took it off, it was all black sealant, and didnt know if it was a certain type of RTV thats required.. also, do ya think ford sells that o-ring that goes on the shift shaft right here....

Awesome, thanks! i just called my local advance auto parts, and they have the permatex ultra black for 4.49 a tube. now i just need to get thos bolt hole tapped and i can slap it together :nice:

And actually, im glad i did.. i learned alot from my neighbor that came over and helped me, and the dude that rebuilt the tranny didnt get all the little shavings out from the magnet on the bottom.. so i cleaned all of that out. He also didnt use a decent amount of sealant between the cases and whatnot, so i would have been pissed if i filled it and it leaked, and had to take it apart anyways....

good stuff. you didnt even get into the good stuff though. taking the shafts out and replacing the blocking rings and inserts and stuff. but i guess if you dont need to than its just a waste of money.
