Sorry for being such a NooB. Is revving the engine in Neutral (Manual trans) with the parking break on OK, or am I burning something? Could someone explain if this is the way to rev and explain why it doesn't hurt anythiing if it doesn't? Thanks

As long as you are in neutral, your brakes are only keeping gravity from moving you.On flat ground, you don't even need a parking brake.I'm guessing this is what you are talking about. You're not hurting anything, but just curious as to why you feel the need to rev your engine whie sitting still?Did you just get exhaust or something?

When the transmission is in N, the stuff that transfers the spinning force from the engine to the driveshaft is disengaged. The only thing spinning is your engine. The drive shaft and the rear axle is not spinning. This is like cutting the chain off your bicycle. You can pedal all day and nothing else happens.

The parking brake is a mechanical linkage to the rear brakes. Very much like the caliper brakes on your bicycle. Since the rear wheels aren't turning, you won't burn your rear brakes.

The only thing you are risking is over rev'ing your engine.

Except that what he said about the engine being the only thing spinning is not true. With clutch out the tranny is directly linked to the engine, but not to the driveshaft.

A minor correction, but honestly, I'd be more worried about messing up my tranny than the engine. Anytime you rev the engine you should have your clutch in.
