Drivetrain AOD cable adjustment?

Hey everyone!

So I'll be replacing my stock AOD tv cable because the accelerator ped is stiff. I've narrowed it down to the cable.

I found a "good" used one supposedly. My 1990 Ford shop manual shows two ways of adjusting it. Most say you have to do the pressure test. Be here Ford states two options.

From what I gathered, if during moderate acceleration the transmission shifts into 4th or overdrive at around 40 mph, then it's setup pretty good.

Anyone else do it this way?

That was pretty much how I did it on my '90 AOD car and had no shifting issues.

It looks like you are on the right track. I'm curious as to whether you have taken the existing cable off for cleaning / lubrication? I've had much improved results with several cables over the years with a good cleaning and a tube of dry graphite lubricant.

Let us know what works to fix the problem.

I have some motorcycle cable lube that seems to be a liquid graphite...

No I haven't tried that yet. I think it's definitely worth a try. I also purchased another stock OEM cable. What is this graphite lubricant you speak of?

That's the route I'm going to install and adjust the cable. That's basically exactly one of the methods in the Ford shop manual.

Thanks for this. Excuse my noob questions, but do I just squeeze some inside the cable casing? I assume it's hard to get the whole inside of the cable lubricated?

Most of the motorcycle cable lubes have a very small metal tube that will allow you to spray into the cable housing, alongside the cable....

Clean as much of the inner cable as you can with Isopropyl Alcohol. Then work the lubricant in as much as possible.

I never knew about the motorcycle cable lubricants. That looks like a good option.

Back in my motorcycle days, I had a fitting I would put on the end of the cable cover, that allowed me to pressure insert the dry lube. I looked in my toolboxes, but I couldn’t find it. Here is what it looks like:

As said above, a graphite type of lube works best in cables.... The silicone lube would not last very long...
thats " my opinion" ....
