When cruising in my 93 LX 5.0 (AOD), the car shifts slow and smooth. When I am at a stop and let off the brake (no gas) the car accelerates quickly. On a flat surface, it will shift into second after it gets up to the proper speed.

When I am cruising and in third gear or second, it will NOT downshift. It just accelerates smoothly. If I mash the gas to the floor, it will NOT downshift. It just goes faster in the gear its already in. When I do get it to downshift, it shifts early. Is there a way I can adjust it????????

Is this normal????

Not normal. How long has it been doing this?
The bushing for the TV cable might have broken. Open the hood and look at your throttle body and see if the TV cable,(the one that goes to the trans) is popped into a plastic bushing on the throttle body blade where the accelerator cable is located. If not, get a new bushing and don't drive the car till you get one in. You don't want to burn up the trans.
If it is hooked up, then you might want to look at doing an adjustment. Not sure why it would be doing it now, but doesn't hurt to check. See below link.
Ford AOD Transmission

If that is OK, look at the fluid level. If that is good, then I'd replace the fluid and filter. Maybe the valve body is sticking. Then have a good trans shop take a look at the car. But my bet is on the TV cable.

Thanks for the link. I believe this is the problem. I started last winter with a tear down of the upper half of the engine. Once it was all reassembled, I found that the little black tab on the bottom of the t/b was broken.

I did not know where to buy one, so I fashioned a fix with some wire and routed it back to the original position as best I could. The problem started after that. It loooks like it is back to the same spot, but off by a little. Would this make a huge difference?

Also, while I was tearing the car apart, the car was on front jackstands. I had to cut the trans. lines in order to do the oil pan gasket. After that was done, I re-routed the trans cooler lines. Once this was done, I added an after-market transmission cooler. I then re-filled the transmission with fluid. I did so by a funnel going down the dip stick tube on the passenger side. I have done this many times and have never had a problem. This time, all of my fluid poured out near the trans. pan on the drivers side. It was an instant leak! I could not find out where the leak originated!

When I got the car up and running again and on the ground, I added fluid and nothing leaked out. Could I have damaged something???

Your help has been much appreciated!

less than 5/16th of an inch out of spec on the TV adjustment will smoke your trans. I just adjusted mine to fix my tranny shifting problems.
