AOD faster that 5speed?

There's an arguement going on elsewhere about this. In my personal experience, 5speeds have always been quicker. My '80 Capri, bone stock motor, 3'73s, with a 5 speed raped my Ex's '91 GT bone stock motor, stock gears with an AOD. And my Ex's '90 bone stock motor, stock gears, with a 5 speed (god rest her soul) smoked his brother's '90 vert bone stock motor, stock gears, with an AOD.

Wait, the 5 speeds I mentioned above probably are quicker because of weight and gears. Right?

So, I guess my question is: Is a bone stock AOD LX hatch quicker than a bone stock 5 speed LX hatch?

I'm thinking no but, I just thought I'd ask you guys...

t5 every time bone stock. The capri has a weight advantage over everything listed by the way. Gears and a 5 speed that didn't exist in 1980 didn't hurt any lol

No a stock 5spd will spank a stock AOD.

No, it's faster because of the launch and faster shifts of a 5spd.

BUT!!

I will take a worked AOD ANYDAY over a 5spd! And by worked I just mean a high speed stall converter and a shift kit. That's the cheap way to work it. You can pay 2500+ for a Lentech or other race AOD's out there, but the cheap way is pretty effective.

Stock for stock the 5sp will rape an AOD. A stock AOD has shift points at like 4800. On the other hand i think my AOD with a 3200 converter, shift kit, and rear gears has and will beat some 5sp cars.

Yeah, that must be why my Capri has never been beaten by another stock motored fox. (I am not condoning street racing) The Notch might give it a run for it's money though.

Might have to take them both to the track someday. Just to see...

This is assuming both cars have the same gears,but the 5spd car came with 2.73 and IIRC the AOD cars came with 3.08 gears,with a 3.27 optional?

Ive seen T5 cars run about 1/2 a second faster than AOD cars.
My AOD car feels like a dog.

I have had both. Currently have a bone stock aod and its a turd. The car is overall in better shape than my old 5 speed but is slow b/c the stock stall and gears.

Plus I believe most aods had 273's with a 3.08 option correct???

I'd rather opt for a built AOD, myself ... mostly because I suck at driving a stick in any way besides granny-shifting. Although I'd still like to pick up another T-5 Fox sometime for a DD, and just for variety.

There is a weight difference between a T-5 and an AOD, but it's not so much that as the aforementioned items of launch RPM's and shift points. Also, there's a difference in powertrain loss percentage between a T-5 and an AOD between the flywheel and the rear wheels, as an AOD will usually absorb a bit more horsepower.

T-5 PRO'S: Lighter; less powertrain loss %; human-controlled shift points; easier to rebuild/service, higher-RPM launches.

AOD PRO'S: Consistency, easier to DD, and ... uhhh ... some other advantages I can't think of right at the moment.

I used to be real good/fast at shifting. Haven't had a reason to shift extremely quick lately so, I don't know if I've lost my touch or not.

i actually have heard this alot. A bunch of different people told me to buy AOD, sounded stuppid but alot of people believe this. they say with a shift kit i could beat your hands.

I had an AOD, and a 5-speed in the same car. With the AOD and a 2400 stall it went 14.2 @ 97. With the 5-speed and not a single other change with a week of driving it under my belt went 13.9 @ 99.

A built AOD will be a great tranny. A built auto will shift faster than a person can. The real advantage if your a good driver is the gear ratios. The 2.40 first in the AOD sucks whereas the 3.35 in the T5 gets you out of the hole much much better.

I couldn't see my car going much faster with an AOD unless it was built up real real well, and even then I doubt it would be all that much faster, and would get worse gas mileage!

If you want to kick the crap out of a 5 speed car build a aod with a wide band kit. The differance is huge. Makes you 3.27 gear a 3.89 in every gear but od.
