AOD install ?'s

i have a problem, i bought i a junkyard aod, and the shifter linkage is opposite. the aod in the mustang leverage point down towards the ground, and the junkyard point up towards the sky!!!! and there not swappable cause the leverage is a solid piece going to the rod that goes into the actual valve body?shifter mechnasim.... possibly this aod is for column shift or something.....what other cars had this tranny.....
what should i do, i just contacted the guy who sold it to me, and waiting on his response; but regardless what should i do???

got an AOD i'll sell ya, it'll fit right in, good price for what i got in it. its in the classifieds, 375.00

Clean the valve body out of your old AOD, make sure you keep track of exactly where the check balls go, and plug that puppy into the junkyard AOD. Should be a direct swap.

ok, so that whole rod/mechanism all has too come apart??? what car would have that linkage setup upside down like that??

As you suggested, most likely a model with a column-shift. I know that it's backwards between Fox AOD's and Panther (Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Town Car) AOD's, according to guys who've swapped Mustang AOD's into their Panthers.

Also, IIRC, there's a governor at the tailshaft that you'll want to swap over from your Mustang AOD, as well. That may or may not apply to yours, depending on the year ... and whether or not my brain is remembering things correctly. I just remember a lot of dudes over at crownvic.net doing an upgrade on their AOD to allow it to shift at a higher RPM rather than the stock level below 5000 RPM ... unless I'm confusing this with the AODE tranny, instead... Argh, somebody help me out here. I'm running on 4 hours of sleep today...

You are right darkwriter. The AOD that you have is out of a crown vic or Town car or a grand marquis. The output shaft of the trans and or the rear extensionhousing might be longer than yours. You have to look at how much the output shaft sticks past the extension housing.Compare it to yours. As for the shifter arm you can swap it out with yours. What I would do is call that guy back and tell him that the trans you bought is not out of a mustang. What is wrong with yours?

drats,,,,,,i hate being lied too, he told me it was out of a 92 mustang, but i guess it was my fault for not noticing the upside down shifter leverage, but i thought it was something that could be flipped off on that nut, but its apart of the whole assemply....grrrr,,,i might sell this junky and rebuild mine....

ps. i just read this off a forum with a guy who had the same problem etc....
one of the responses was
"You don't have to take it off just drop the pan and there will be a nit on the iside close to it loosen it up and just spin it 180 Degrees and youre all set"...
is that BS or what??

You can swap the shift arm out. Put the trannys side by side and make sure they are the same length first. I can walk you through the whole process of how to change the shift arm out

You can get an old shifer and linkage, cut a weld the shaft to fit the needs of both the tranny and car. You'll need to be pretty precise but we did this to a buddys car about 3 months ago. Put a liconln tranny in a fox. Worked pretty good.

you can change it faster then fabing something up. I can swap them out in 20 min tops. Its that easy

well i they are both AOD's for sure. but the new junker is a colum shift... the first idea was to shift out the arm like blady is saying. just take my old arm and put it int he junker....but ive been reading and found that people just take them out and flip them!

Don't know how hard it is to swap. I bet it depends on your knowledge of trannys. Me it would take a while as I have never had an aod apart. A tranny expert would be much quicker than the average joe.

I am the tranny man.No you cant just turn it 180, You have to take your orignal arm off your trans and take the one off ofthe junker. Then put your original one on the junker. Do you want me to walk you through it. Have you seen if the transmissions are the same length yet. Do that first. That is the first thing you need to do before anything

i guess i will have to remove it all....and switch them all,but the guy might swap me for another correct tranny. the only problem is this tranny is in good shape,but oh well!!
