AOD just took a crap. Which tranny to get?

Well, i was just driving down the road on the way to the mall. I decided to punch it in 2nd. It was in D so the time came for it to shift into 3rd and it did. Then less than a second later it put itself back into 2nd. I didnt think anything of it at that moment because there was a light not to far ahead and i let off. So i put it back into OD and started taking off. It then shifted into OD where it just rev'ed. So damn, there went my OD band. I then put it into D - damn, no 3rd gear. In D it just engages 2nd gear and when i let off the gas it sorda disengages and goes into neutral. Then i will hit the gas again and it rev's up to the correct RPM and catches the gear. If i leave it in first it takes off in first until i shift in D or i can pull it back to 1 and continue in 2nd and if i let off the gas it stays in 2nd, it doesnt disengage like D does. I dont know exactly whats broken but i think ill be getting a new tranny. How is the TCI-431000 (part number on www.summitracing.com)?

i had many AOD's in my other 90 vert..went through about four of them and hen went to a C4..it was nice cuz ididnt have much in it..go it fromn the junk yard, changed the fluid and a b&m converter and the hammer shifter and tranny cooler that was already on there from the AOD..it ran great, shifted good and SUCKED when you wanted to leave town unless you want to rev about 3000-3500 down the highway(that was with the 4.10s) but who would want to put 3.08s init with the C4 just to drive it down the highway..stick with a good AOD if you like driving your car..and TransGo maeks a wonderful shift kit for the AOD..best of luck to ya

You've got 4.10s, so you don't "need" a C4 and overdrive IS nice to have. A C4 is a non-overdrive transmission, IE 3-speed. It also will require some fabrication to make work in your car.

Find a GOOD local transmission shop. When I had my AODE rebuilt, I asked a few of the local racers who they trust with automatic transmissions. Have AOD rebuilt by whichever shop you find; let the shop know what modifications you have to your car and what power levels you need the transmission to handle.

I had mine rebuilt with "racing" internals; kevlar bands and cluthes, a hardened input shaft, and other key parts.

While your at it, install a high RPM stall lockup torque converter. I love my Edge Racing converter.

An AOD properly built with a strong, high stall converter is a killer strip transmission which retains overdrive for low RPMs on the highway.

Good luck.

Get a c4 I got that with a reverse valve body its really nice and can hold the power up to 650hp. With the shifter it cost me around 1,800.

My AODE is rated for the same and I paid $1900 for it- but I still have overdrive.

whats the difference between the forward shift pattern and reverse?

Forward shift patter is stock, you shifter works like this:

D
2
1

Reverse is more like a manual:

1
2
D

BTW, with the mods in your sig I'm suprised that your AOD lasted at all...nitrous itself eats stock automatic transmissions, let alone installed on a car with a heads/cam/intake combo!

I barely went through a 10lb bottle of N2O. I never sprayed on the h/c/i combo yet. i got the combo together and left for boot camp. I'm no on my leave and it broke. So any suggestions on what tranny to get? I want an AOD so i wont need any custom fab and i want OD.

where is park and neutral at in the reverse pattern?

No body offers a reverse pattern Ford overdrive automatic valevbody....that I know of.

But reverse pattern C4's are

P
R
N
1
2
3

All AOD's are

P
R
N
OD
D
1

AOD-E's and 4R70W's are

P
R
N
OD/3
2
1

with an over ride button to turn OD off.

The AOD is a good tranny with a bad reputation. First things first, do not ever do the 1-2-1 shuffle to get and hold 2nd. It's the fastest way to ruin an AOD. Next, a properly built AOD will survive just fine behind around 450 hp.

If you read my post again, you'll see that I did give you a suggestion about what to do with your transmission.

I honestly don't recall where park, neutral, and reverse are.

yes, I read that you had yours rebuilt instead of buying a new one. And rebuilding yours cost you $1900?!?! Compared to the $1330 i can have a brand new one shipped to me for? Does anyone else suggest the rebuilding route?

BTW, i did do the 1-d-1 shuffle quite a few times. Thats why i want the manual valve body now ;-)

Have it rebuilt by a dependable shop with decent clutches and put a good valve body in it. Either a Lentech, Art Carr, PA etc.. A good valve body along with a good cooler will help AOD's last. Most of the good valve bodies out there can either come in full manual or a manual/auto. With the full manual there is no need for a TV cable. I have the manual/auto VB in my AOD. On days that I feel just like riding I put it in D and cruise. And when it's time to play & on track days I use it in manual mode.

1. I have an AODE, not an AOD. AOD rebuild are a tad bit cheaper.

2. Show me a $1300 brand new AOD that will perform as well or take the level of abuse that my AODE will.

dont forget to check the clip on the cable in the throttle body that dtt92lx mentioned i think some people even called it a kick down cable but not sure if that is right. had 3 mech. look over the tranny and car no one saw the broken clip untill after i personally learned how to remove my own aod trans. by myself. then some one owed me money and offered a trans out of his t-bird and come to find out it had issues.so the moral to the story is do not make any changes untill you pop the hood and see for yourself/ or you can be like me and take a perfectly good trans. out for nothing not fun!
