I was driving along today and when it goes into OD it slips,,if you give it gas it revs, then goes back into gear. Im hoping its the fluid level but the dip stick is way off so Im not sure when its full or low!! Thankd for any advice!
What color is the fluid and does it smell burnt? Most likely its the overdrive clutches and will require a rebuild. Its too bad you dont live close to me. I'm a technician at an Aamco and I could have gotten you a deal.
. Im going to Aamco Monday. How much is this gonna cost?
OD band is fried. My 93 is the same way and I am just too lazy to fix it, plus it doesn't really get driven on the interstate but at around 70mph it is turning aroudn 4k rpm.
If you are going to keep the AOD then when the rebuild it then at a MINIMUM have an A+ overdrive servo put in. The AOD in Mustangs have a "B" servo and it doesn't have enough clamping force to keep the OD band from slipping especially at WOT. WOT on a stock AOD while in OD is a big.
The best thing to do if you have the funds is to have the smaller OD band, I believe it is 1 1/2", replaced with the wider 2" AODE OD band. But this means replacing some other components in the trans which means more money.
Here are a few websites to check out
Baumann Controls www.becontrols.com These guys sell a lot of stuff for AODs and other Ford automatics. Lots of good info and good parts.
www.clickclickracing.com Check out their forums for automatic transmissions and you can pick up a lot of good info and advice there.
I hope you don't plan on having them rebuilt JUST the O/D band. If you're gonna pay to have 'em tear it apart, do it ALL, do it ONCE, and have 'em do it RIGHT.
Personally, I'd just hunt for a used AOD and either have a basic gearhead throw that in there, or do it yourself. Then buy a manual on tranny rebuilds/build-ups and practice rebuilding/beefing up the original on a bench while you drive around on the other in the meantime. Hunt the classifieds, eBay, Craigslist, etc. for a used tranny, probably can score one for $200 to $300. Might have to pay someone $300 at most to have 'em swap it out for ya'.
This sounds good and all, but if you have Aamco or most any other main stream transmission shop install the better parts, it will void the warranty. Most transmission shops will only warranty a trans built to factory specs.
Thats what he said he was gonna do. He said I mite not need a total rebuild. How much would something like this cost?
Thanks Daggar
