AOD people, please help..

I finally got a tranny to replace the one that's in the car, however, I noticed that the manual lever on the old one is pointing up, and the other is pointing down. does this mean that if i put that tranny up there, would the pattern be reversed or would it not work at all. I was trying to pry the lever out but I think there's something holding it in place from inside. the trany is defenitely not from a Mustang, it froma fullsize car ( either a town car or something else w a 5.0).
any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

you answered your own question. It needs to point down. the shift points on a lincoln are different than on a mustang. DONT pry on the lever. long story don't ask. It is held in with a nut and a shear pin.
