My 2.3l wont shift out of first gear in the automatic transmission. Reverse works fine, along with if i shift it manually into second

I'm typing from memory here, but there's a speed governor located in the tailshaft of the A4LD that tends to stick. When it does, the trans acts like you describe. It can be replaced or freed up by removing the tailshaft housing with the trans still in the vehicle.

I haven't actually done this repair, just heard about it and passing it along FWIW......
