have a 1991 lx coupe with the AOD and 2.73 gear. Plan on installing 3.55 or 3.73 gears. I know that the 3.73 rpm's will be o.k for highway driving in overdrive. My question is for the occasional quarter mile run, what will be the approximate engine rpm with the AOD in DRIVE (D) at the end of the quarter mile with 3.73's vs. 3.55's. car has stock motor with H-pipe and flowmasters.

i would go no lower than 4.10's with a aod also with a shift kit and a bigger stall you will be the man-if i may make a suggestion.

w/ 373's i'm pretty much right at redline at the end of the 1/4 mile. I'm not paying that much attention, but right when i pass through the traps at 100MPH i think i'm at 5000-5200ish, maybe a tad bit higher.

do you mean the transmission is in overdrive or drive at the end of the quarter mile?

the Trans would have to be in Overdrive- if your Racing and trying to make a good Pass.

In D you wouldn't make it past half track gears or no gears-.

anymore quetions-

I would have to argue that. You would be fine with 373 gears, go with 410's. If you think you would run out of gear halfway down the track with or without gears, your crazy. Stock with 2.73 gears, you can do 60 in first gear! and if you look at gear ratio's, d in an aod (3rd gear) is the same as 4th gear in a manual, so with your slow shifting in a manual, you'll get passed up with a good aod, stall converter and some gears.

No offence sweet low,but you have me confused on your therory on gear selection I don't think you quite understand what your saying but to clarify the right gear for the car I would say if you remain stock then going the 410 route would be good.I would and will always recomend a auto over a standard especialy turbo or s/c and a standard for the street to have fun with but thats it.I would recomend 373 for the all around gear.

just my .02

???????

First off, the stock AOD will not let you shift into OD at WOT. So you can floor it all you want with the shifter in OD and it will never shift to 4th gear.

Secondly why would you want to? It's not even a gear it's a band.

Read my first post. WITH THE SHIFTER IN D, i pass the finish line at the end of 3rd gear. No need or desire to go to 4th (OD) at all.

Edit: after rereading my post, i didn't mean it as arrogant as it sounds. sorry

I still don't know guys, i'll have to get the stang out tomorrow if it's nice to see what Top RPM's i can get out of [D] Drive-

I'll check i'm sure i could be wrong, don't race on AOD to much.. 3rd one

using stock 16 ponys, 225-50-16's - with 3:73's

I've got 3.90's and I have plenty of rpm's left at the end of the 1/4. You'll be fine with 3.73's.

I believe by your post that you've still got the stock stall. When I had mine I was crossing the line at a little over 4500 because of the lockup in 3rd gear. I was doing the 1-d-1 shuffle so I made the rpm's hold out a bit more than by leaving it in D from the starting line. ( I know the 1-d-1 shuffle is bad but it worked for me for well over 8 years and no probs so far. Got a Lentech to take care of that now)

Mustang5l5 is right about the rpm with 3.73's. Either 3.73 or 4.10 gears will really wake up the car. 4.10's will be about 5500rpm through the traps. I think you'll be disappointed with 3.55's. I have a Performance Automatic valve body, GER 2600 stall convertor (stalls @2200rpm with stock cam) and in auto "D" my car shifts at 5500rpm. I've tried shifting it myself but it makes no difference. What would really help in 3rd would be a non-lockup convertor and a one peice input shaft. This would help you pick up speed faster in 3rd gear.

You're going to get a lot of replies about how your top speed will go down with the 3.73s. Actually, only your theoretical top speed goes down, but your top end will actually go up a few mph.

Stock 'Stangs were drag limited to about 140mph. With the 3.73s you'll be higher up in the power band when you hit 140, and should be able to overcome the drag a bit more. I imagine speeds near 150 mph would be possible with 3.73s and a few other simple mods.

hey trooper, ive got a 92' LX with AOD although its supercharged, with 3.27 gears. If i did it again i would go with 3.55s to get a better launch, but in your case with no or slight mods ide go with the 3.73s. Once you hit the track and have it in D, with it wide open youll never have to worry about going into overdrive cause like some of the others said, you will be in 3rd and i would say going 96mph with a time of 15.3 at least thats what i ran with only a few mods, the auto trans really eats power. Once you let off it will go into 4th, but you ll be on the brakes then.
Also you will really notice a BIG differance with a different stall converter, ive installed the 2,400 holeshot and just with that it feels like its accelerating off the line like twice as fast. It took off ..04 tenths of a second off my 60ft time! Also a shift kit for harder shifts at a higher rpm will really help too, if you go to the track, trust me you wont be happy with the car shifting by itself, the 2nd to 3rd shift will probally be around 4,400 and you really need to shift around 5,500 if you want to shift at the peak of your pwerband and get the best time. Running 15s at the track you will pretty much only beat trucks and non modified imports, with all that ive done now at least im into the 13's and can at least hold my own. If i were a 5 speed i would be into the high 12's for sure. well hope that all helps!
