AOD Questions

Howdy,
I have an 86 GT with an AOD that needs rebuilt or replaced and I have a few questions. In my car the shift indicator is 1-D-OD and as I understand it the tranny's are the same through 93 yet I see that the 87-93 shift indicator is 1-2-D-OD. Is there a detent for second that I am not using on my car? or is there a difference between the 86 and the 87-93 trans? I ask because I would love to be able to actually shift through the first three. If it is different will a shifter from a newer car fit my console? Thanks!

The 4-cylinder Mustangs use a A4LD and the shift pattern for that is 1-2-D-OD

The 87-93 V8's with an AOD use 1-D-OD

If you want to shift threw gears...do what i did. When you rebuild your AOD have them install a manual valve body. And to make it even more fun B&M makes a hammer shifter that fits stock style.
