Ok so the tranny in my 86 GT is obviously an AOD. My shift pattern is 1-D-OD. When Racing I shift at 5000 rpm from 1st to drive. Then the car shifts from 2 to 3rd at 4300rpm. What would be a cheap way to change my tranny so I can choose the gears from 2nd to third at my choosing? I am trying to keep overdrive and automataic so a C4 and a manual setup are out of the question. Any info would help.

You could try the epoxy mod, but I don`t recomend it for a DD. Here is info on it.

When it shifts to 2nd, keep it floored, but pull the handle back down to 1. The car will hold 2nd gear until you click it back into D, then it will shift to 3rd gear.

It's called the 1-D-1 shuffle. However, i beleive it does wear the trans some as it engages the OD band to hold the gear. Granted, i did it with my car for 40K miles or so without a prob.

Still wasn't enough...i swapped to a t-5

Some guys get away with the shuffle for a long time some don't. Count me under the latter.

I burnt the OD band out of my 93 screwing around with the 1d1.

Other than the Epoxy mod that white 89 GT posted you can also get a Lentech valvebody. This would give you 1-2-D with a switch to engage OD kinda like the AODEs and up. They are kinda pricey though.

so my understanding is that AODE shift pattern are 1-2-3/overdrive with over drive being a switch. Is this true? If so what is needed to put this tranny into my 86? I go to the drag strip on a daily basis and I have GT40 heads, intake,Shorty headers, and MSD.

To put an AODE in your car your going to have to get an electronic controller for it. Baumann Controls makes a controller for retrofitting an AODE into an AOD car but it costs just over $400 for it plus your gonna have to swap in an AODE so factor that cost in as well.

So as you can see the AODE swap isn't just a pull out the old AOD and put in a new AODE. There are other things that you are going to have to get as well.

If you go to the strip alot then do the epoxy mod like I did, it will save the o/d band.
You could also put the 4r gearset in it for a better launch.
