My AOD in my 86 decided to lose a couple of gears today 42 miles from home. I limped it home in first and second(took the streets). When I got closer to home 1st and second started slipping real bad. Could it be the bands? I am not familiar with the AOD. Also if the AOD is to much work what is the cheapest junkyard upgrade for trannys besides the 5 speed conversion? Will a C4 bolt right up?

Well, do your self a favor and check the linkage for the TV cable just in case it broke while you were driving. The plastic clip is known to break and cause trans problems. Sniff the fluid. If it smells like hot brakes then the trans is trash. A C4 will fit but you won't have OD. Not sure if you have to change flex plates or not for the C4. Mike

definitely check that TV cable. If you are still losing gears, that might be it.
Otherwise sounds like your direct clutch or input shaft broke...pretty common.

That is the exact reason I went to a 5 speed. It took my TV cable clip to fail once.
