AODE acting up

I have a AODE with a Transgo shift kit and until recently it was running just fine. When accelerating at a normal rate, it shifts just fine through all the gears. When I step on the gas and go about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle it shifts fine into 2nd and 3rd. When it shifts to overdrive, the shift is smooth and then all of the sudden the rpms jump up for a second or two, they drop back down. Any ideas? Did I screw up my overdrive by not disengaging it when I step on it?

You should NEVER do a WOT upshift to OD - it'll kill the relatively thin OD band. You are getting flaring on shifts into OD, which means the OD band is fried. You need to get this fixed before it generates too much heat and kills the rest of the tranny. It's really pretty easy to replace the OD band once the tranny is out of the car.

When I get this taken care of, is there anything else that I should have done. I want to stick with an automatic, but I was thinking that since the tranny will be out, I might as well take care of other items that requires the tranny to be taken out if there are any.

I concur with Don. I NEVER run my car in O/D unless I'm on just tooling around.

While you are in there, put a nice converter in it. :wink:

If I do not use overdrive will I cause any more damage if I cannot afford to get it fixed at this point? I guess what I am trying to say is that if I never use overdrive, can I get away without having to remove the tranny until I have enough money to do it right?

If you arent turning a ton of revs or anything, that should work. I might avoid the highway, esp if you have gears of some sort.

I burnt up my O/D and then switched jobs and had to move from KS to MO. Driving in 3rd the whole way sucked. My tranny fluid looked like coffee by the time I made the trip. High temps on the tranny will kill it. As Hissin said, around town will be just fine, but out on the highway, it won't last long at high rpms. So it kinda depends on if you have gears. Good to see the tranny cooler. That'll definately help.

I still have the stock gears - 2.73s. I know that they suck, but they are helping me out in this case. I only drive it a few thousand miles a year and most of it is in the city, so I will see how it goes for awhile. Thanks for all your feedback and info.
