AODE help

I recently inhereted a 94 Mustang Gt covert with 139k on an entirely original package. NOTHING has been replaced on it. Other than the back window leaking, the car is immaculate with one major exception...The notorious AODE automatic. Here's the problem: going down the highway after about 45 min, the car will drop out of overdrive back into 3rd gear and then go back into OD after a few seconds. It also will pop out of any gear at random for about 2 seconds and slam back in. its been doing this for about 30k. Ironically its been doing it less with more mileage. What kind've problem am i looking at? Anybody have this happen to them? Any help would be great. I really want to restore it with about a 10k budget. it still shines like new and has the 302. :damnit:

I had a similar problem one time with my AODE, it would randomly upshift/downshift at weird times. I took it to Reynolds Ford here, and they said the speed sensor on the input shaft was intermittently fritzing out. They replaced it, and everything's been fine since then with the tranny.

I hope its something simple. I might just take to the dealer and do a diagnostic. It was driven for years by my over-the-hill father so theres no real abuse. How much mileage can a stock aode take?
WELCOME TO STANGNET!!!

DO us a favor and repost here when you find out what the dealer tells you.

This is a common problem with these cars, and as many times as Ive seen this posted, I dont think there has ever been give a DEFINITE answer as to the exact cause of it.

The trans war serviced at 84k, about 60k miles ago and roughly 4 years ago according to the paint pen markings on the plastic panel covering the radiator!!! The retards that serviced it before just felt the need to write the info in paint all over my car! This trans shop is a work of art. Evertime I've heard a story about them... it's been how the transmission on thier car quit months after being serviced. I seriously thing they are doing this on purpose as opposed to simple incompetence. Cost aside, I think the dealer is still my best bet. It goes in next week.

Ok, I had the same problem, but when I took it to get the shift kit installed, it came back all better. Also, it had been doing it whenever I turned to the right. My tranny cooler was leaking fluid, so I filled it back up and the problem it gone. I don't know if I helped, but that was my experience.

aode problem

:) Ok so what you are saying is that when you are driving no matter what speed, the transmission switches from overdrive into a lower gear at any given moment.

This happened to me and i could not figure it out for over a year. I tried everything. I replaced tps, maf, ait sensor, tranny service. But to no avail.

I had TWO tranny shops tell me they were out of ideas.

So I took matters into my own hands and came up with my own answer.

The transmission range sensor was at fault. It is located where the linkage hooks up to the transmission. It has two bolts that bolt to the tranny and has a hole where the gear selector shaft goes in.
It is available at the ford dealership for about $120.

There is my two cents

Mine has been doing that for years also, happens more freuquent in highway.

where I would slow down, and it would downshift and then when it would upshift my engine would rev up and tranny hestitate ..

Tranny works fine when I punch the gas and it cycles thru all the gears in order.

anyone able to pinpoint this problem or it could be anyone of those sensors ?

i had the same exact problem when i bought my car... when i test drove it i never got to that point where it was warmed up enough to do it until it was in the driveway... ill look up what i had done, and since then its been cherry :D i know i opted for a new converter while i was in there and the upgraded 1-2 accumulator, but i cant remember what was wrong, ill look at the description of what i had done on the reciept tomorrow if im not bogged down with work... BTW, what is the name of that crappy tranny shop? im close to you and dont want to get a bum deal next time i have work done...(converter and shift kit, or t-5 swap... :nice: )

AODE to T-5 swap......That will fix it!

that's my plan, I just waiting for the tranny to die on me...

Funny part I bought the car well over 8 years (94 GT) and dislike that fact it was a AUTO, but the dealership gave me a great deal on it ...
and said to myself that once this tranny goes it's going in for a T5 swap.

Still Waiting for it to go ... :p

That's my plan too.My AODE has been leaking for 3 months now and there is no way in the world that I'm gonna fix it or put more fluid in.I just wish the damm thing would blow up already so I'm forced to make the swap!!!Either that or the car is gonna catch fire from the fluid hitting the exhaust pipes.

same here, but mine died on me before i decided this and dumped a grand into it before making the decision... now i might as well just go through with it, but i hear ya on the tranny fluid on the mid pipe...i thought something important was wrong for the longest time when it was -20* out and i wasnt putting the car on jacks...
