yes, you would neet to get a chip/tune to redo the shift points. Their won't be as much change then if you went steeper, but your auto's cpu will think you still have the stock gear ratio and it will shift like you have the stock gear ratio. Any deviation from the stock gear ratio, and you'll need a tune/chip to adjust the shift points. Also, some advice, since you have an auto, alot of people say go 4.10's 3.73's @ the least. I have a 5spd, i just got 3.73's and i love them, i think any steeper and i wouldn't like it as much, i love how the 3.73's are. just my .02
 
I have an Aode and I went with 3:73's. I have had the EPC turned up 1/2 turn in the valve body and it shifts fine. I may need a tune like the other guys state but I haven't seen any problems as of yet. Depending on how hard I'm on the throttle it grabs second and never stops pulling.
 
Thanks for the input. I have read that a shift kit may help with the shifts and I thought that if I did not go up to 3.73s, I may be able to save a few bucks. If I will NEED a chip even with 3.55s, I will probably go with the 3.73s. Any other thoughts?
 
With a shift kit and 3.55's the shift points WILL be off, but I'd say 99.5% not enough to smack the limiter. I think you'll be fine. In fact a shift kit is usually enough to speed things up hydraulically with 3.73's to keep that from happening. If you do want a chip, then skip all those choices and get 4.10's - they work great with an auto and a mild combo.

I was under the impression that the computer made shift points based off of RPM's. So, with 3.27's at WOT and 5000 RPM, the computer sends the signal to shift, and by the time the tranny actually does, you maybe will get 400 additional RPM's (just a guess on the RPM's, i think there is a full second delay if I am not mistaken because of low line pressures and such with the stock valve body) gained because of the delay stock AOD-E's have. However, with quicker reving 3.55's, you will have a similar scenario, except this time you may gain 550 additional RPM's. With 3.73's and 4.10's, the problem is even further magnified, so that is why you encounter problems with bouncing off the rev limiter (with 4.10's, you can gain too many RPM's and bounce the limiter before the AOD-E is ready to shift). My car with 4.10's and stock tranny and converter only bounces the limiter if i spin the tires in first gear, other than that it shifts like a champ with no problems. I did not need a chip to control shift points, but Isuppose would if I added additional horsepower, making the car gain too many RPM's between the time the computer told the tranny to shift and it actually occured. Let me know if my logic is incorrect here, but I would say pass on the custom chip for now and spend your money elsewhere. Also, unless you have already purchased the gears, go for at least 3.73's, or even better, 4.10's. With a stock AOD-E car, why spend all the money for gears and a install and not notice a difference, you won't regret the 4.10's for performance, maybe at the pumps though.
