I'm looking into replacing the alternator on my 88 GT. The car is is all stock with no added high drain electrical accessories, so I want to stick with the 75 amp alternator. My question is, are all remanufactured 75 amp Motorcraft alternators basically the same? I ask this because there is quite a price difference between the remanufactured units on LMR and Rock Auto.

And whats wrong with Oreilys or advanced? Life time guarantee.
Seriously, rockauto and lmr give stangnet members a discount. I've had good luck with all of them.

I was just curious if there was a difference in the materials used to justify the substantial price difference.

What are the prices of each?
Yes, there could be a big difference. Premium components are manufactured by Transpo.

LMR is around $140 and Rockauto is around $80.

Quite a difference.

If you were local, I would give you my original 2G for free.
I would only replace the 2G with another 2G if you never use the headlights or fog lights or the heat/defrost fan.
It was also known as the Ford Fire Starter because of the marginal design of the power connector which melted & caught fire.
There should have been a recall.
Upgrade to the 3G, it's almost plug n' play.

I bought a rebuilt alternator for my 1991 Merc wagon (5 L). It was not a good experience. Go new or with
an outfit that has a reputation for standing behind their product.

95% of the time it's daylight and the windows are down. Not too worried about the firestarter getting me!

What brand alternator was yours? I'm going with Motorcraft, hence my question if all Motorcraft alternators were created equal.

Can't remember what brand alternator. It was rebuilt by a small, one owner shop many years ago. I used to support local, small businesses, nowadays I only support those that have proven themselves to be reliable. I would go with Motorcraft, but make sure the retailer is going to replace it should there be a problem.

The Motorcrafts have a 2 year warranty, so I'm hoping I can just take it back within that timeframe.

It was not the alternator that was the problem, as stated by @Blown88GT it was the plug in connector that caught fire, I was sitting at a stop light in the day time with nothing but the engine idling when mine started, I pulled the battery cable off, unplugged the melted connector and drove home. Change the connector.

I am interested in the LMR alternator, their SVE line - it is actually supposed to be a new alternator, not remanufactured - and it puts out 130 amps where they claim the stock 99 Mustang six's alternator puts out 110 - I think my Motorcraft alternator (if that is what caused my car to die on the freeway) only lasted about 4 years, installed by the dealership in the area I broke down -

I am reading very bad reviews about AutoZone's duragold "new" alternators - I don't care about a lifetime guarantee - I want the best quality part that will last as long as possible - I just had my 99 Mustang six drop dead on the hwy, at the Ford dealership now, last Motorcraft alternator installed by dealer only lasted about 4 years, I was considering having actual new alternator from SVE (LMR's brand) sent as fast as possible, but Ford said labor on 2 year warranty would not be honored if I had another part installed - I will be following reviews of SVE alternators though, if they are building new alternators with great quality parts - that would be awesome -

What you need to know - If you have a local electric motor shop, that could be the best way to get a high quality rebuild of your Motorcraft alternator and starter. They are likely to do a better and more careful job than volume rebuilders. If for no other reason, they know you will bring back any problem to the person who did it.

What you asked- I do not think Motorcraft has different quality lines of parts. Now who’s actually making or rebuilding the parts that go in their boxes for 30 year old cars is another question.

Haven't heard a lot of good reports about the SVE line. Might I suggest PA Performance. The units in their 'bargain bin' are brand new and may have a slightly, unnoticeable blemish therefore, they have a deep discount. All units are thoroughly tested before being shipped. I've used 3 from their bargain bin over the years and never had an issue.
