Are speedo cables supposed to be cruddy on the inside?

Hi everyone

This weekend i finally got around to checking out my bouncing speedo and why it doesnt go all the way down to zero. I have a few questions:
1. Is the speedo cable 2 pieces? Mine has an attachment near the tranny. I have one cable coming out of the gauge cluster and one from the tranny and they meet at about the bellhousing. I thought the speedo cable was supposed to be one long cable from the tranny to the gauge cluster?

2. I disconnected one side of it and looked inside. I'm not sure if someone greased it with something they weren't supposed to, but there is crap all between the cable and the insulation. Sounds like a need a new cable?

It is probably full of corosion. Try and clean it up with some WD-40.

If you think it might be bad at all id just pick up a new one. I got one last week at advanced auto for 14 bux

Might also be a good idea to check the speed sensor in the tranny, make sure the gears arent stripped or anything
