auto.trans. difference

electric auto transmission

Thanks for the reply. What I need to know is how can you look at an aode and a 4r70w and tell one from the other.A guy has one for sale and some people say that it is an aode another person says that it is a4r70w?The guy doesn't know what it came out of but says that it is a 4r70w. Thank you

Like Punisher said the difference is in the gear sets. The ratios first to OD are
AOD-E 2.40-1;1.47-1; 1-1 .67-1
4R70W 2.84-1; 1.55-1; 1-1; .7-1

I would guess that one turn on the input shaft gear on the AOD-E in first will turn the output shaft 2.4 turns vs 2.84 for the wide ratio set.

If you are looking at installing it on a '94 or '95 with a 3:27 diff I would want the 4R70W. That would be the same as having a 3:87 diff gear yet still having the benefits of lower revs at speed.

Don LaSota should be able to nail this one.

Here's a couple things I've noticed on the V6 4R vs the AODE:
* The transmission housing is different but I can't remember in what regard
* The 4R tailshaft has a larger diameter than the AODE
* The later 4Rs will have the VSS hole in the tailshaft plugged.
* The pans on the 4Rs can have a sump on them

aode or 4r70w

Thanks for the info.I went ahead and bought it as a 4r70w,I hope that he didn't sell me a wolf ticket .I will try keep trying to find out what this trans came out of .If you think of any information please let me know. I will check out the ratio as soon as I can.
