You cannot do this with a manual? I can do that plus smoke a cigg with my left hand and still drive perfect. :) 5-speeds are the best! I feel more in control of the car with the manual tranny's.

my friend and i did it once on his 2002 stang... but his car didnt have any issues with any thing he jsut forgat to turn off his lights...

Since we're all tossin' out our .02 on this...

I've got an '03 GT with the 5 speed. 3650 trans never has given me a minute's trouble, no clutch chatter, no throwout bearing squeel, Hurst billet plus shifter, Hurst stick, knob, boot, the whole old school thing. Yes, it's a ball when there's not a soul on the road and I've got a few miles to just wring it out. But, that's maybe 1/10th of 1% of the time where I live; the rest of the time is traffic. I'm so darned tired of sitting in bumper to bumper tie-up's, going 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 1st, and on and on, I'm putting up classifieds on some of my local sites looking for someone to do a total 5 speed to auto swap with me.

And, just to keep the record straight, I do know how to drive a stick. I learned on a '64 Plymouth Valiant, straight 6, 3 on the tree (column shift for the kids), and did so more years ago than I want to remember right now.

If you're looking to get a car as a weekend cruiser or play car, wait for the 5 speed. If you plan to drive a lot on poplulated areas during rush hour, get the auto with a nice converter and chip to reprogram the shift points, and have a ball.

For what it's worth, the extra 300 +/- pounds of a 'Vert isn't a built in handicap. Where's the majority of that weight? Yup, right there on the rear tires. While everyone is lighting 'em up, doing great smoke shows, you hook and go.

Anyway, I would rather be squezzing the fun bags than having my gears shifted for me.

But the debate is truly AWESOME (cept for that guy that called someone an idiot of course) :D
 
Stock autos suck. At least in the Mustangs. I felt ashamed to have one, but I got a really good deal on the car. However, w/very little investment they can be bad ass transmissions and all you have to do is worry about steering and pressing the gas pedal very hard.

However, if you just want to drive around rev'ing....and stick is for you.

truth is that if u want a stick shift then wait, worse mistake u could make is get some thing u dont like/want if u want an auto then go for it
but honestly a girl wouldnt let u "squeze her fun bags" or "grab ur stick" just cause its a vert mustang

and once ur going at a constant speed u can "grab teh fun bags" and when ur slowing down they can "grab ur stick" so its like 2 for 1

the stock 4R70W hardly sucks. the stock AOD and AOD-E's did.

NOTICE i did not say stick was faster or better but automatic is just so dayum boring at least to me, i like the feel of the clutch i like knowing that not everyone can drive it, i like to see people stall and laugh at them, i like 1st 2nd and 3rd gear burn outs, i like redlining my at any given time, i like to decide when shifting is best and what gear i need, i like being able to roll back (in gear) at drive thrus and scare the guy behind you, i like knowing that its ok if i dont turn off my head lights all i have to do is push it 2 ft for it to start, i could go on for ever...
sure an automatic can smoke a stick if the driver sucks or if the other car is not as moddified but cmon an auto will always be looked down on(but not by everyone just every one i know including my grandma) and whats the first thing people say to you when they see ur car "dayum nice car! is it a stick?"

my vote is for stick always will be and will never change
idc if its a low 12 second car ill take a 14 sec GT stick over it any day, plus a shift boot looks way sexy

FYI, when you engage it name calling in discussion threads it has three basic effects:

1) People will stop reading your post and be more likely to not read future posts

2) It makes YOU look bad not the person you are insulting

3) It does not enhance your argument or make it any more persuasive

I concur and nonconcur at the same time. My '03 GT has the 4R70W and I do not like the stock shifting. Nothing a tuner did not fix. I thought it was a weak tranny based off everyone's opinions. However, after reading all the tccoa articles in reference to the jmods it seems like a good tranny. When I said it sucked stock, I was referring to this transmission. The others, I don't know enough about...actually I don't know anything about 'em.

Anyway, the 4R70W seems to be good to about 400 hp, probably more like 450. However, with some work it can easily take a lot more. Although I have not tested it, it seems that with a simple tuner bumping the shift pressure to the max, it shifts as fast as most stick drivers could do. The problem is that you still lose more hp through the auto then a stick. Also, isn't the auto transmission heavier?

Remember, I'm a happy auto driver, just pointing out the bad sides. Still, with the tuner (for shift pressure) and 4.10s my simple GT will get slippery on the 2-3 shift.
