Interior and Upholstery Automatic shifter issue

So I just recently bought a 96 mustang and I notice in the morning especially I have a hard time shifting out of park. My brake lights light up when I step on the break so I feel it may be an issue with the shifter itself. Anywhere I should start looking for the problem?
