Well after about a month of having my transgo shift kit installed, my 4th gear went and now its time to get a new tranny. I would love to convert it to a 5 speed and I'm trying to figure out prices. What do you think I should do in terms of price: Have a new/rebuilt tranny installed? Convert to a 5 speed? Or install a racing automatic tranny? whatever I do it has to be the same price or cheaper then installing a new/rebuilt automatic tranny. A shop will be doing this because I don't have time to do it myself. Also if I stay auto it has to work with my Hammer shifter. Any input helps. thanks all!

It depends- how good are you on a stick?

You can always learn-but I don't think doing a conversion is worth the hassle. Plus it will probably end up costing more.

I would get it rebuilt by a reputable mustang shop and get them to add high performance clutches and updated parts from the newer 4R70Ws.

ADD a PI Stallion torque converter-these things are expensive ($800) but well worth the money. Having a built auto is such a different experince from a stick. The car will feel more ready for the drag strip. A stick will make the car feel more like a road racer perhaps.

I have had both built autos and now have a 5-speed Mach I and liked the auto for the strip but love the 5-speed on the street.

If I do take my car to the track, it wont be for a while and I'll be going very rarely, so I'm looking for something thats fun on the road. Having a 5 speed would be great. I need a place in the Baltimore/Washington area that does this stuff.

Personally, its your call but I'll give my .02 cents and say stick with the automatic. Go to www.tccoa.com and look up the articles for the 4r70w automatic transmission. It can be modified to handle some serious power output. My advice is the following.

Transmission cooler - A must have for any auto tranny as heat is the number one killer of the automatic transmission.

Shift kit - Ditch the transgo and do the "Jerry mod shift kit" or get a new performance vavle body from some place like Lentech transmissions or Performance automatic. You'll be glad you did in the long run.

Torque converter - You're already going to spending some serious money to rebuild the automatic and while it's out of the car, you might as well get a high stall converter to put back in there rather than the stock one. I recommend a Precision Industries Stallion series converter with no less than a 2800 stall. Anything less than this would be a waste. I got my torque converter from www.houstonperformance.com shipped to my door for 714 dollars. Expensive, yes it is. However, you can get it installed when you get the transmission rebuilt because to rebuild the tranny, they're going to have to pull it from the car and when they pull the tranny, the torque converter comes out as well.

Gears - I suggest at LEAST a 3.73 gear ratio. I would say no less than 4.10's but you do have a 98 GT with the Pre PI cylinder heads and cams found on the 99+ models, therefore, you don't have as much of a powerband. 3.73's would be good, but 4.10's would be awesome. You can get gears for pretty cheap at www.mustangtuning.com or from Randy Stinchcomb at Liberty Ford. You can contact him over at www.modulardepot.com He can also help you out with getting some of the Ford parts you need to rebuild your transmission.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and let us know.

The reason why I would rather put a built auto or 5 speed in is because if I get a stock auto, I'm gonna wanna beef it up. But now I'm kinda skeptical mainly because I don't know if the Transgo shift kit is to blame for my tranny.

I'm gonna go the cheapest route and have my tranny rebuilt at a performance shop. What I'd like to do is have it rebuilt with some performance mods. They said the rebuild will cost about $1700. I guess thats a decent price going by what other places charged  . What can I have them install so it'll shift quickly and be able to take abuse? I'm skeptical about having another shift kit in there being that its most likely what got me here. I dont want a full fledged dragster (saving that till I'm outta college). Just want some SAFE quick shifts so I can ratchet the Hammer when I want. This is my daily driver and money is pretty limited. Also I've been reading about manual valve bodies. Will this let you safely downshift when you want as well? As you can see I'm pretty confused with what I should do. Help :D
