Automatic Transmission questions...

I have access to purchase a 94 GT with an Automatic Transmission. This car has been sitting for over half a year. I have talked to the owners of the car about why it is sitting there and they said it doesn't shift out of any gear you originally put it in.

The owners said the tranny was rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago but ever since the problem started they just let it sit (under a pine tree of all things). Now this is the only thing I know that is wrong since I am obviously not going to try and start it up until I get the oil changed.

I threw a $1500 price at them and said I would get back to them when my tax return came. Other than that, it has a flat tire, bassini headers and some type of exhaust.

Now what I need from stangnet is possible suggestions on what is wrong with the transmission and if it would be worth to buy or how much would I be looking at for a rebuild of the transmission.

Sounds like a steal...

Won't shift out of whatever gear you put it into? I honestly have no idea.

You could get a factory spec rebuilt AODE into it for less than $1000...so go for it.

I'll probably do it if they will let it go for $1500. Don't see any reason they wouldn't, its just sitting there wasting away.

Perfect time to swap to a 5 spd.

I would spend 8 bucks and change the oil for them to see how the motor is doing. That could hugely affect offering price. I would do a comp test and see how things are doing. Expect dry rot in tires and rubber, etc.

i forget the actual name of the sensor, but unofficially it sounds like the "PRND21" switch/ sensor. they are very cheap and go bad often in our cars. it basically tells the car what the gear selector says the transmission should be in for a gear. either way, even if its much more complicated, i'd go for it if i had 4 grand to throw at it. that would cover the cost of the car, plus any real transmission problem that it has. go for it!, and keep us posted after the tax return

i agree... buy a T5 and swap it in. you wont regret it

Well, bad news.. the guy said he was going to keep it. I figure he just didn't want to sell it. It seriously has been sitting there for half a year and has sap buildup in some areas. I feel sorry for the car honestly and wish the guy would just sell it cheap.

Give it some time. Once he actually gets into it, and the novelty of doing the necessary resto'ing wears off, he might let it go again, and for cheaper.

go there every week with a offer.

if he says no after a while, show up with cash. when he sees the cash, he wont turn you down.

i know people who have done this all the time trying to buy older cars that people have.
