automatic transmission shifters

Hey guys,
I just bought my mustang two weeks ago, and the other day I bought an artcarr full manual valve body and 2500 rpm stall converter at WFC7 so i could liven up my AOD. My question is should i go with a new shifter? the stock shifter is pretty sluggish and i wouldnt want to accidentally shift from first to third all the time. Are any of you guys running after market shifters? What make? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

well if your using tha stock shifter it won't go from 1st to 3rd... it'll hit 2nd on tha way

im not..but a buddy of mine was running a hurst quarter stick in his chevelle and it was awesome. b&m makes a nice lookin one for mustangs

yaeh i was thinking about a b and m but the guy i was talking to at the WFC said they have had problems with them because they use the same gate (or something like that) as gm cars. Can any one validate this? He could have just said that though so i would buy there shifter.

Having installed a few shifters lately in customer cars, I really like B&M shifters as they seem much more sturdy than the Hurst stuff. I've swapped more than a couple Hursts out for the B&M units. The hursts have good mechanism ideas, but they seem flimsy.

But the B&M AOD Mustang Hammer Unit they sell seems to fit the bill much better, haven't tried it though:

If it is as strong as the Quicksilver, it is a decent piece.

Strangely the OEM shifter is pretty darn durable. More than most aftermarket ones. I'm still using the OEM in mine... But I'm all electronically shifted now. When I had the Manual Valve body, I REALLY wanted a different shifter as well.

I use the B&M pro stick( like the hurst 1/4 stick) with my Art Carr AOD. I bout the mounting kit from Holcomb Motorsports that locates the B&M and Hurst 1/4 inthe stock location. I had to cut the little lock out lever some so it would fit by the radio. Plus I used a 5 speed boot for looks, but the console plate had to trimmed so I could get the car in first. Nothing major just a little notch at the back of the plate. Then I found a leather shift knob from a T-bird inthe junk yard for $3....

Another vote for the B&M Hammer Shifter. Just put one in my stang' and I love it.

With that B&M shifter can you put it in any gear or do you still have to do 1-D-1 to hold second and can you throw it down into first and second gear when ever you want?
