avoiding the speed density

i purchased my 1st car & beginning the mods on the motor, i am aware that the non cali 88 and below foxbodys are equipped with speed density. i want to do as much as i can performance wise without converting to mas airflow. i will do such when money allows. what can i do without programming or converting my ecu?

Mass air shouldn't be avoided it should be your first step. Why are you against it?

Do like I am drive it the way it is and buy everything and do it at once. I have an 87 SD car. I put a K&N filter not a CAI, because when I go MAF I will need a different one. I put headers and full exhaust. I bumped my timing to 14* and added 373 gears. The rest I did was cosmetic. If you do it like you say you will be doing some things twice. You can do the few things I did and still use them later after the MAF conversion.
I've already got my new ECU and harness, Cobra upper & lower, 255lph fuel pump. 70MM TB and DSS 331 rotating assembly. I still need heads, cam, injectors, MAF sensor, CAI and the rest of the little crap to make it right. When I have everything I will pull the motor and do it up.

there are guys pushing close to 300whp with cobra heads/intake and still keeping the stock SD set up.

speed density is good. just gotta get a tune if you change the cam and/or injectors. mass air is just more adaptive and easier to work with. my car is an original speed density car too. i converted it when i rebuilt my motor a few years back. took me all of 1.5 hours.

SD is gonna be faster stock for stock. I wouldnt worry about swapping over unless you decide to go pretty far with it.

swapping over to mass air is extremly easy. I did everything I could to avoid switching it over thinking it would cost me an arm and a leg. It hardly costs that much once you buy a cpu, meter and meter plug harness. given the chance again I would do it first. Then you'll have no reason not to do something to your car.

im not against it per say but i am just on a budget as of now. im the type of guy who puts performance 1st. i could care less how it looks. so im trying to get low 13's high 12's before i go for looks. full exhaust woulnt be out of the question would it?

no not at all. as stated earlier, you can change pretty much everything but the cam and injectors and be fine with speed density. just can't get too gnarly with the heads and intake, but you definitely can swap them.

1987 speed density

I ran my 87 for years without mass air. Alot of us did back in the late 80's. I had the usuall motor work done. The idle would just hunt, go up and down and foul plugs easier thats all. Instead of switching to mass air, I went carb.

i had a b303 with no problems. Saying you cant change cams unless you have mass air is not true...

That's not saying much seeing as a bcam is nearly the same as the stock HO cam with more duration....

Sounds like your cuttin me down... I was just saying you can change cams with speed density because someone else in the thread said no way.

We also had cars with custom grind crower cams with duration well above 250 @ o.50 no problem
So smart guy, tell me the specs on the stock cam and the B303....
While your at it, the X and the Z as well. Hurry up and look it up on the net, times a wastin'.....

His post is nowhere near as condescending as yours. Is there really a reason to insult him in 2 posts because you disagree about the specs of a B cam?
