Hey all

Spent last night tightening up my drums in the rear, and noticed my axles have a bit of play. I can turn them about .5 of an inch either way and pull it out about a quarter of an inch, kind of wondering if that is normal.?

I also noticed that my care came with the track loc but is at the moment an open diff. I do hear a long of banging and clanging around back and once i throw it into gear it is kind of rough.

Now i hear that over time the diff if not serviced or taken care of will need a rebuild is this what i am expecting with the issues. What is strictly needed to rebuild it?

Thanks

The in-and-out-movement is technically normal, but it's also an indicator of how worn your trac-lok diff clutches are. 1/4 inch of movement on each axle is excessive IMO.

It sounds to me like your clutches are burnt up. It will cause more play and open diff. The car will run fine for years this way, it just wont put power to both tires if you get them spinning. If you dont plan to rebuild it however, change the fluid more often. You dont want all the trash from burnt clutches floating around in the diff.
