Backfiring

I've recently noticed that I'm getting some popping sounds from the exhaust which I believe is backfiring. It happens mostly on downshifting, or when I rev the engine at idle . I've only made the most basic of modifications, CAI, SCT XCALII tune, Borla Cat Back, and had these mods for almost a year with no audible signs of backfire until very recently. Could this be attributed to taking out some timing @ the 4000-6000 RPM range to get rid of some minor pinging(something I did several months ago). What possible causes are there for this? Is it harmful to the car? How do I get rid of it? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

i have an 06 gt with corsa axlebacks and pypes o/r h. it does what yours sounds to do. i had a 96 gt with lt bbk headers o/r x and flow 40s with dumps that did it as well. it wasnt harmful to mine. but i dont know about yours, it sounds like the same symptoms to me.

Even in my stock 07 GT, I hear some pops and "backfires" when coming to a stop or decelerating in gear. Pretty normal with a more agressive cam overlap. Most modern cars will do it, but they muffle the exhaust so well that you rarely hear it. With a free-er flowing exhaust like ours, it will stand out.... even worse with an aftermarket exhaust.

Just listen to other "factory performance" cars out there..... Neon SRT-4, Infiniti G35, Nissan 350Z, new Z06, etc. When in gear and slowing, all of them will pop out the exhaust a bit. It's a good thing, not hurting anything.
