how do you know if your distributer is bad?

here is what mine is doing.....

the arm on the rotor is rubbing the underneath of the cap and causing a nice plastic scraping noise. I put an old rotor on and it was even worse.

who's had this problem? and what was it.

I'm 99% sure that it is the distributer but i just want to make sure before I drop $300 on a MSD dizzy.

the only thing i'm worried about is if it has something to do with my cam having to much play. as far as i know the cam doesnt but it is one of my concerns.

thank you,

Scott

I would say it is shot. I remember seeing some sites with 94/95 stock take offs for like $99 a while back. Maybe a search can find you something cheaper than the MSD if you do not really need the MSD.

I had the same problem, except mine was so bad that the rotor was breaking of on the points on the cap. It took me 3 rotors to drive the thing 5 miles home.

What causes a distributor to go bad? Do they just wear out? How long will they show these symptoms before taking a crap on you?

I have an MSD on mine and was glad my stock one went out. not only does it make everything easier, when you pop the hood for ricers it's the first thing they notice.

i drove to seven eleven and when i got back in my car it was making the horrible scraping noise which i tracked down imediatly when i saw the distributor cap vibrating. there was no warning that it was going bad. I got into the throttle on the way there and i think that was what killed it.

by the way for anyone wondering the up and down play is normal. that wasn't what was wrong. it is the wobbling from side to side that wasn't normal. I guess that would be the easiest way to see what kind of shape yours is in. pull it and see if it has any side to side wobble. if so then that might be an early warning.

Mine took a poop under wot, crossing traffic on pch. I felt like an a$$ sittin on the curb in the middle of huntington beach waiting for a tow truck. I did however have my MSD dist sitting in my garage, so 20 min. later I was flyin low again.
