balancer broke while driving

What kind of B.S. is this, here i am driving between 35 and 40 mph when my entire car starts to vilently shake. I pull over and look under my hood and see that my belt is all chewed up and that my crank pullie and balancer are half way off the crank :bang: . i pulled the balancer off (more like it fell off)and find that a third of the balancer shaft( the part that the crank slides into and touches)is broken off. I cant see clearly but im hoping that the Screw that hold the balancer on didn't brake off in the crank :nonono: . If it did Brake of in the crank how do i go about getting it out and where can i get another balancer screw. I found the balancer in stores for aslow a $99, but can't seem to find the screw. So my Question is where can i order or find this screw, and is there anywhere i can get the balancer cheaper?

I got my balancer for just under $60 shipped on ebay, new. If the bolt broke off in the crank, then hopefully the threads arent messed up and you can use an Easy-Out on it. The bolts should be available from the Ford parts counter or through a retailer that has a decent selection of ARP fasteners, like Summit or Jegs.

HELP FIX MY CAR

upon further inspection i have found that the balancer bolt is infact broken off in the crank :bang: . i am wandering if the bold is a revers thread bolt and what level of difficulty should i expect as far as tring to get this broken bolt out? also what tools will i need to do this project. Last im not tring to spent alot on this project so what would be a good balancer for a desent price.

Well I will be helping with this project. What tools would be need to put the new balancer on? Any tips or tricks to make things easy? Should we torque the bolt as much as we can or is there a specific number? Thanks for any help.

If you can get it out with an ez out it would be best, you need a drill (drill bit sized accordingly to the proper size for the bolt and ez out) you may need to put a little heat on the bolt as well.

That are a standard thread turn the BOLT counter clockwise to unbolt it, torque the bolt to 70-90ftlbs when finished. Put a little oil on the crank before installing the balancer, alos put some oil on the front timing cover seal (I'd suggest replacing the front seal since it is all apart, less then $10 at your local parts store) You should use a dampner install tool, so you don't pull on the threads of the crank, a new bolt is only a phone call away, the ARP works fine.

Inspect the front cover for cracks, depending on how the balancer came off it may have cracked the cover, or anything else that it may have hit when flying off, radiaitor, oil pan, etc...

Brian @ www.adperformance.com can get you a SFI Pioneer for around $175, they are nice pieces. I wouldn't put a stock or used balancer on anything....

Last night i took off my front bumper and my radiator. So i have a clear straight line of sight of the broken bolt in the crank. Today im going to try and get the bolt out. I have a couple of friends who are going to come over and help me out. I was wondering if anyone has had this same problem of a broken balancer bolt in their crank. if so what did you do to get it out and how hard was it. Im planing to use an easy-out.

Did the bolt break off flush with the end of the crank or is it broken off inside? If its flush, that bolt should be large enough to see if you can get it to rotate out with a punch. This would be a gentle procedure not a reckless one. If it won't budge, then drill a hole in it and use an easy out. The biggest one you can get in there so the easy out doesn't break off in the bolt. Cause then you will have problems...

It will probably be easier to work on if you pull the radiator. Also less risk of gouging the radiator by mistake.

I'd start soaking it in penetrating lube, liquid wrench, PB blaster etc... your going to need it. Just make sure with the ez out you drill the hole dead center, use a center drill bit if you have access to one, then use the required size.

I had that problem with my balancer.. but it blew completely off, snapping the crank bolt leaving half of it in the crank.. the balancer went right threw the radiator.. what a mess let me tell you.. you don't need a ez out.. all i used was a left handed dril bit and cordless drill.. put the drill on reverse and it caught a part of the bolt and unthreaded it out.. remember theres no torque on the bolt since its broke so if you go to drill a hole in it, it may thread in more.. 720-7847 thats the part number for the crank bolt i bought from JEGS... its a grade 8 mr. gasket bolt... only $10... it install the balancer just line up the key ways and tap the balancer on gently.. then thread the bolt on and tighten it, it will go on the crank the rest of the way when you tighten the bolt.. good luck
