Balancer Question?

Ok i wanted to check my timing because i heard pinging so i cleaned the balancer off marked 10 degress BTDC....saw 0 ATDC AND 30 BTDC... so i started the car pulled the vac advance plugged the hose....put the timing light on it and WOW it was way past 30 degress...so i back it down still cant get the 10 degree mark to the pointer i know the car is running fine now no pinging but the mark isnt right,,,Can the balancer move is it off....i mean its not even close to the mark like it sjhould be...Im confused do i need a new balancer? i guess i can do it by ear...but thats not 100 percent....what should I do?????

You can get #1 cylinder to top dead center and look at the balancer to see the position. This will confirm if the balancer spun on the inner hub depending what the timing mark says at TDC. While you have it there, you can rotate the distributorso the rotor lines up with the #1 plug to know you are at 0 degrees.

That is what i think i was going to do today to see if the balancer did move....I think it did.....
