Took my 96 gt to the ford place to get the front end alligned and they told me I needed ball joints. They said they couldn't replace the them they had to replace the control arms. Is this true or are they just trying to upsell? Thanks.
Find another shop because that is total BS. If that is true then I guess I never replaced mine about 2 years ago. I must have imagined it. You can actually buy a tool at the parts store to replace them yourself but its easier if you have a hydraulic press.
Ford never offered the ball jpoints as seperate parts; they were always replaced as a unit with the control arms. That doesn't mean that is the only way to do it, just that it is the way Ford does it...

I agree, get the Moog ones, or another set of aftermarket ones. Hell, if your car is lowered, just get a set of the Steeda ones. I havent heard a lot of complaints about them. I wouldnt get them unless I had something like this where I actually needed to buy a new set.
I guess it changed over time...for a number of years after the SN95 was released the only way Ford offered ball joints was with the lower control arm...(I was working in auto parts/repair back then and that was the way it was )
upon further review...maybe it was the control arms were only available with the ball joints??? it's been almost 15 years....
Rock auto has AMAZING prices.. If you felt the need to lower your car another 1/2" or just wanted a little better balljoint, you can get the Steeda X2's.. I have them, and used them to drop my front another 1/2".. I must say, removing the balljoints was probably one of the MOST frustrating things I've ever done to my car.. I can't remember exactly what was messed up, but it was a BITCH
Removing the ball joints is cake if you have a press or can rig them up in a vice and use some heat to expand the LCA. If you are considering buying steeda x2 ball joints call up MM first and as what they think about them. 5 minutes later you most likely wont by buying them.
