2 parter. I want to buy a set of Bassani SS X-pipes w/cats for my 89 GT.

1) Where is a good place to buy pipes from? Anyone had a good experience with a particular place?

2) Anyone pass smog with the pipes with cats. Especially in CA.

Thanks for looking guys. Thanks for any help!!

I've got the catted Bassani X and Bassani cat-back. I pass with no problems. Well, I did have one jackass inspector that noticed that there weren't four cats under there and tried to fail me on that. When I explained that I actually paid MORE to have the catted system so that it would be smog compliant, he said I just wasted my money. I politely asked him to lower the car off the lift and told him I'd take it to an inspector with some knowledge about performance exhaust systems. I gave the guy a 5 for his trouble and took the car across the street and had no problems at all. I'm in N.C., so you probably don't want to buy here because of shipping costs to CA, but my exhaust came from CPRacing in Charlotte. They have good prices. Go to CPRace.com and check out the site. You'll have to call them for pricing, though.

Be VERY careful to ask the emissions questions of the folks out in CA who are gonna be inspecting it. There are many instances of techs wanting to see the original configuration of cats on the car. So if it came with 4, and your new system only has two (even if they're the 3-way cats designed to replace the older-style 2-way/1-way systems) there are places that won't pass you. Ask OUT THERE -- we can only help you if we're the ones doing the inspection.

I was VERY disappointed in my experience with Bassani. I paid for a custom Quiet Thunder muffler (mine is a single 3" system). Within 3 months/2K miles of having it on the car, it became much louder than it was originally. So much so that it no longer solved the problem I bought it to solve - which was to quiet down the too-noisy-for-me FlowMaster that had been on the car. Be aware - the Bassani is a perforated/packed design that will get louder over time as the packing wears/burns out.

smog/bassani

I got mine from www,sacramentomustang.com for around 378.00 :p
you should not have a problem if everything else is in the right place most place just look to make sure you have cats at all! If you have problems I can give you the name of a shop in Walnut creek that is really good and they have common sense!

No X Pipe is smog legal, neither is any catted H or X. Technically. You can also find somebody who might be willing to help you. I know I did, because my 347 isn't smog legal at all.......

The Magnaflow is 50 state smog legal and so it the VRS. I got stuck witht he Magnaflow one right now and it doesnt fit, im having the same problem as Rydeon. And as far as I know it legally a car Pre ODBII only needs 2 catalytic converters, because the other 2 are only precats. The Magnaflow Xpipe is for sure street legal it has a CARB number if you call and ask.

Thanks Cdog,
Sacramento is about 45 min away. I would love to go and pick one up instore incase if i have any problems or questions about the pipe.

I don't know what your application is, but in RI the computer hook up does not apply to a 95, so I had no problems with computer faults. However, I did get the tail pipe sniffer. With the S-trim and the Bassanni, etc my emmisions were well below the norm. Good luck.

Some parts may have a CARB # but most shops will give you hassle anyways. Just go to the test only stations that look ****ty they usually don't care, especially the ones that say "Pass or Don't Pay". If you are forced to go to a smog referee any X pipe will be noticed. Maybe an H won't.

Not Legal? The car came with a catted h-pipe!!!/////// Michael Yount is rite (again) I have there cat back, and it definitly got louder :nice: IMO,,Bassani is the best sounding exhaust for 5.0's,,,,JMO

I have a Baassani catted X pipe and stock mufflers and I never have had a problem in So Calif passing SMOG. In fact never a question about them. I was tested twice cause the tester couldnt figure out how an 87 could be so clean. In seems with those 2 Catco's I am running a little cleaner than I did with the bone stock 2 year old car. And much cleaner than I did right before I put them on. Got mine dropped shipped from Need for Speed in Fla! About $345 but that was in March of1999.

Like mentioned before - all this talk about what happened to "me" regarding emissions doesn't help anyone else too much. THere's simply too much variability car to car, state to state, inspector to inspector. I'd make friends with an inspector - at least so you can find out ahead of time what's gonna be a problem and what's not.

Thanks everyone for their help! I've asked around and I'm pretty sure that im going with sacramento mustangs to buy the part. Also a bit of good news for me is that my friends father manages a smog station. He agreed to over look the bassani pipe and stick my car on the sniffer. I doubt my car should have any problems passing mostly because my car had the 2 precats hacked out before and it passed with flying colors. Thanks to everyone again for the great input.
