Battery relocation question

I bought a bettery relocation kit to stick a regular battery in my hatch. My buddy is about to buy one as well, but he has an optima red top. i know for putting regular batteries in the hatch, you have to have a sealed box. my question is, when you have a gel cell optima, do you have to have it in a box, or can you just use the mount kit they offer and be legal to race?

no i dont think you need a case for the optima batteries

but, you still need to ensure they battery is anchored down well

You should look it up in on the NHRA website. They have to have the rules listed somewhere there.

My thoughts (not being a 1/4 racer): Put it in the box anyway. That way it looks cleaner than just having the battery exposed in the hatch / trunk area. You will be prone to putting something on the battery that can arc across the poles (thing pliers, metal pens, etc. Plus when you go to the track there will be no question of passing tech.

Thats what i thought as well, but his car is really nice, and he wanted to use one of those billet hold downs and keep it exposed so you can see the billet... i know where you guys are comin from, and i have a nhra book in the mail, i just thought id throw it out there.. thanks again for the help.

I'm pretty sure you need the box anyway. And i think for the track you need a cut-off switch. Every track is different though, some enforce it, some don't. Boxes aren't expensive, so i would get one.

I got the 06 rule book the other day and you still need a sealed box or some type of firewall in the back no matter what kind of battery it is.

I believe that regardless of the type of battery, you need a firewall, box, or some type of barrier between you and the battery.
