Hey guys, my new belt is squeaking like crazy. Whats some cures for this? I wouldnt have ask but my friend said that putting some belt dressing would just cover up the problem. The belt I put on it is pretty tight, and it only does it when you rev on it. What could be the possible problems? I feel kinda stupid asking a question like this.

Dave

Something is having difficulty spinning which is causing the belt to slip, thus the squeaking. My friends smog pump froze, changed that and the squeal went away. I'd check your fan clutch and smog pump and see how freely they turn.

Ok, so I just went out and took the belt from the tensenior(sp) and turned everything I could. The Smog pump spun pretty easily and did the a/c pulley. The power steering pulley wasnt very easy to spin. I didnt play with the alt but im sure thats not the problem. The waterpump also spun pretty easy. Are the power steering pumps supposed to be easy to turn?

Dave

Not sure about the power steering pump. Since that's always on I'd imagine it would be a little more difficult to turn. Another idea is to run your car with and without the AC on and see if it still squeaks. It's probably easy to spin since the clutch isn't engaged.

slight misalignment of the belt/pulleys can cause noise. have you had any accessories off lately?

the PS pump should turn pretty easy. worst case, spin yours at the shaft (not pulley). then go to the parts store and have them pull one and spin it at the shaft. note the difference. granted that one will have no fluid etc, but you will get an idea.
good luck, Dave.

Thanks, but no I havent had any accessories off lately. I had the tensioner off, could I have done something to it then to cuase it to loose tension?

Dave

there is a wear indicator on the tensioner - might check it and make sure it is not beyond its limits.
if it is ok and each accessory's pulley spins freely (belt removed), i dont know what else to suggest. i have had some belts that squealed more than other styles of belts (ie ribbed rubber vs the felt belts). is the existing belt rubber and glazed at all? i tend to replace them, but you could take yours off and scuff it and put it back on (try to put it back on the same way it came off - same rotation direction). good luck.

Update guys.

I have notided little pieces of rubber all over everything under my hood. That clearly suggest that the belt is getting eat up. From what I have been experimenting with, it only squeals when I have load on my alt.(Electric fan on). So, what do you guys thing? I revved the engine from under the hood myself and the tensioner never moved when reved, so its still holding pressure. I belive when my electric fan is on, its causing something to happen. Im not sure, its a mystery.
