Best aftermarket rear diff for a street car????

All out best? Hands down a torsen differential. Smoother than butter, constantly biasing the ratio, and about as reliable as they come - there's nothing to wear out. It's amazing how they work really but work well is what they do. :nice:

i know the factory unit is good but i had 2 other fox bodies one with a aftermarket diff and one with a fresh factory unit. the diffrence was night and day. so anyone have any good brands or models they can recomened?

As far as traction goes, a factory rebuilt unit with the alternate clutch and plate setting will do very well. Many of the aftermarket unit's arn't really much different than the factory. Maby they use a coil spring instead of a S spring.

Mine is the factory rebuild with an extra clutch running the CPCPCPC setup, I leave identical black marks. Kind of scary if it's wet though.

I agree about the locker working the best. On a true street car I'd buy an Eaton or an Auburn. The newer Eatons might be a little better because they have mor durable carbon fiber clutches and are rebuildable. It's close. My only problem with the Auburns is that they are throw away units. Performance is about the same. A locker costs twice as much. The torsen I hear is really good for a road car, something thats not making a lot of power, or something that isn't launching hard.....really pricey too.

31 spline trak-loks can be found at a junkyard, if you want a cheap alternative. It's very strong, and rebuildable. Only thing is you need new axles. That's what I run in my 347 hatchback, leaves 2 black marks and spins both tires pretty much all the time. It also stands up to launching on ET streets pretty well.

If you want a true aftermarket diff, like the others above said, the zexel torsen differential is pretty much one of the better ones. That's why it's in the Cobra R.

If you're not going to race the car, the stock differential is fine.

For an upgrade, I had (and highly recommend) a Truetrac differential. They redesigned them this summer (uses 3 pinions now instead of 2), and it performed flawlessly in my 99 Cobra Factory Stock car last year (high 1.5 60 ft @ 3340 lbs). It is also very nice on the street.

The Detroit Locker is a VERY strong unit (stronger than the Truetrac, Eaton, or Auburn), and good for a mostly-strip car, but its not super friendly on the street like the Truetrac is.

BTW....I'll be putting a Truetrac in my 04 Cobra in a couple of weeks.

Good luck with whatever you choose.
