Best brakes kit for 2002 GT??

Well after 75,000 miles my brakes are finally shot. I must say i am surprised they lasted this long. So I am looking to upgrade to something better for performance and appearance. I want to change everything (rotors, calipers, pads, brake lines, etc..) on all four sides.

Can i get some opinions on best bang for the buck. Remnember i am looking for appearance and performance. Also if anyone knows some good places to find complete brake kits it would be appriciated.

Street car that wont see anything more than a DD and a rare Strip appearance. Stock calipers, slotted rotors and some nice DD Ceramic pads and SS Lines. $150-$400 depending on rotors/pads/lines.

Car with hard miles and possible autocross or open track day; do the Cobra upgrade on all four corners. New slotted rotors/semi metallic pads and SS brake lines. $400-$800 depending on pads/rotors/lines.

Heavy open track car; Brembo/Griggs/AP Racing Brake kits. Enough said. $800-$2500.

I'd say cobra upgrade but prices have come way up.

When I had my 03 gt, I bought a Mach 1 kit with calipers, brembo blanks and ss lines for 350 new. Now it's much more.

The kit now resides on my fox....they were too good to trade in with the car.

ok well seems the cobra kit is the best way to go. The brembo, baer, and wilwoods, look sick on the car, but not sure i could fork over $3000 for brakes....

I went the Cobra route on all four wheels with goodrich ss lines from the frpp site.

Super simple to install. The rear axels need to come out which isnt that hard of a job.

The difference is night & day.

Stock brakes the abs would always come on and I could only make one emegency stop before the brakes were useless.

Cobra brakes feel like they are 4x the stopping power over stock and they dont brick like the stockers. You can hard brake from 100-30 consistantly without worrying about your brakes failing.

I will upgrade the rotors to drilled / slotted just for the looks and to see if theres a performance upgrade when these cobra ones wear out but I must say this is a very smooth package.

And with all that said I cant imagine how awesome the $3k brake systems are, but at this point I cant imagine why id need a $3k brake system other then for looks/bragging rights.

..oh and with the cobras I now worry about out braking people behind me and watch my rearview more often

Cobra Kit upfront only and Hawk Brake pads made all the difference on my car. Was gonna do the rears, but a lot of people said not necessary and I did not want to mess with removing the axles either.

Well i found a Cobra kit for all 4 corners for about $900. does not seem to bad. The only thing i don't like about it is the "Cobra" on the calipers. I don't want my car to be a faux Cobra or anything.

Anyone know if they have a kit without the "Cobra" writing on the calipers or if the set can be found cheaper??

I have the Bullitt calipers. Same as the Cobras but they have a pony on them in stead of saying Cobra. See if the same seller has those.

I also faded my stock brakes to crap which is why I upgraded. One hard stop from speed is all it needs for the stock brakes to give up completely. Tried a second stop and they were useless. Cobra brakes are worth every penny.

definitely do the cobra upgrade...and if you you like buying break pads a lot then go with cross drilled...otherwise just stay with the slotted...plus if you ever do decide to go to the track or anything you wont have to worry about the cross drills cracking on the rotors...slotted will look just as good as cross drilled because when you look at your car you'll see nothing but rotor and caliper behind the 17's and almost no space between...that to me looks sexier that a lot of shiny holes n crap...just my .02 though

Cobra r kit. Same quality caliper as the $3000 brembo kits and half the price. Normal cobra kit is an upgrade but not worth it. For $1200 ou can get 13 in rotors with brembo 4 piston calipers with the cobra r kit.

I got the Bullitt/Mach 1 kit for only $350 (came with rotors, pads, SS lines, and the calipers). It was a great upgrade over stock, although it's probably mostly due to the fact that I replaced the stock rubber lines with SS lines and the fact that the '98's came with single piston calipers from the factory. The new brakes look f'n sweet too. Looks alone are almost enough to justify the $350 price tag... doesn't sound like you can get that kind of a deal anymore though. I don't think I would have done the brake upgrade if it would have been more than $500. I probably would have tried to find salvage 2 piston 99-04 GT calipers, along with new rotors and pads. Oh and $1500 is a good deal for the Cobra R kit, but it's still a lot of money to spend especially if you never plan on road racing your car.

If you cannot get the Mach 1/Bullitt kit for less than $600, I'd suggest buying braided SS brake lines, new pads, and new rotors. Your car will feel like a completely different machine and I think you'd be very satisfied with the performance.

One thingnto keep in mind.....your spare tire no longer clears the front brakes. If you have larger rear wheels that you can't swap tom the front, you'll need to get a cobra spare.

Or ditch the stocker unless you are taking a long trip. AAA and a can of fix-a-flat work for me if it comes down to that...
