Best Buy For Exhaust?

So I'm looking into the exhaust market and the choices leave me staring like a child in the cereal isle.

Okay so here is my situation; I'm a new stang owner. I used to drive a modded sl2 Saturn, so I'm in a new world. I see x pipes, h pipes, catbacks and so on. The amount of available upgrades for the stang are so much more abundant than the Saturn, so I am lost.

My question is.. what kinda of exhuast should I go for? I want street legeal, and a nice deep tone. I want it to rumble, not gargle, ya know?

Will Catback do the trick? If so, which brand stands out in your mind?

If this totally isn't your choice for a first upgrade, tell me what I should do.

Thanks guys.

For the deep tone you want an H pipe normally. If you go with an Off-Road pipe (no cats) it sounds a bit more raspy. Some of the best names in exhaust IMO are Borla, Bassani, SLP.

There's a TON of threads about exhaust, it is a good place to start. If your car is a manual I would also look into a short throw shifter :D

Happy modding!

and gears :) ....I have an o/r mid pipe (not H or X just two dual pipes so I have to get a UPR x pipe soon) with welded in flow 40's and dumps and the sound is great...flowmaster tends to be the more deep tone muffler you hear on most stangs..where the other mufflers are mostly straight through and will result in a diff tone..

Thanks for the quick response.

I saw the slp loudmouth exhaust I think it was, and it looked interesting. The borla really looks nice, pricey though.

I saw the Flowmaster 40's or whatever they call for a reasonable price, it was a catback and seemed okay.

I'm sorry for posting something talked about alot. I figured i could get a post specific to me, haha.

It's an 03 gt, stick.

While writing this, the other guy brought up the 40's. Should I wait and get an aftermarket x pipe to go with the 40's .. is that how it works?

And about the gears, how easy/hard are they to install and what makes it worthy?

based on the tone you want..if you arent worried about emissions pick up an O/R H pipe and a couple flowmaster 40's ..if emissions bother you then maybe a catback flow 40 system would be better...

gears require a pro to install but they help the car to accel alot more quickly and give ti a more agressive feel when you get on it..

What kinda pro's install these gears, and what would I expect to pay?

Emissions aren't much of a concern, I'm pretty sure their are no emissions testing in florida anymore.

So how exactly does this exhaust setup work? downpipe - x/h pipe - 40's? Is the flowmaster 40 the whole system from the cat back?

I'm so new to this, sorry fellas. Great help though, I'm learning. Thanks for your patience

Headers - Mid-pipe (x or h) - catback

flowmaster 40s are the mufflers that would be part of a catback, or welded into the existing catback.

most people will start with a catback, and then eventually add a mid-pipe when they want more noise/have more money.

I went with just the flowmaster 40 mufflers welded in to my stock cat-back. Didnt really make that much difference. about 3 weeks later I ended up getting the BORLA Cat-back. Probably the best Cat-back out there since your paying 500+, simple install and you will be very satisfied. :nice: :nice:

Here is a link to someones stang on here, it has probably one of the best sound clips of the BORLA stinger Cat-back. Sounds soooooo good, plus an X or H pipe some day down the road.. :D

My buddy has the magnaflow Cat-back on his 04 GT sounds very good also.

1. Borla- Great mean sounding Cat-back, perfect tone and look, great idle that you can actually hear when your at a stop sign or red light. You get what you pay for. 10

2. Magnaflow- Also a great sound Cat-back, not as loud as the BORLA but definatly a great Cat-back, not really as strong as the BORLA idle but is definatly a purchase if you dont have the money for the BORLA. 9

3. SLP- I have heard a few of these, Very loud kinda like a motorcycle, more of a Camaro sound. 5

Many other people may agree many may not. Just my opinion on the Cat-backs that most people go with.

loudest cat-back out there. add a mid-pipe and well....its REALLY LOUD!
install's as easy as changing your oil, just not as messy.

I have an 02 gt manual. I have borla exhaust with the stock h-pipe. The sound is great...it has an deep sound note, and its loud!!! You can hear me coming down the road for a block or so!!
